jj9 Do you remember the link you gave to the site selling shims. well it would seem after registering that they don't have any. After extensive searching I am unable to find any internet outlet that sells shims at a reasonable price, there was one that wanted £12.00 each which i thought was rather expensive. I am beginning to wonder of Citroen have stopped people selling shims and one must go to them.

i have always ground a dip into the middle of the shim arbe, then placed the dip onto the valve stem
its very easy to do with a dremel or die grinder

The catcar site that JJ9 linked is very good for part numbers, but not really good for buying directly from. Based on your post, it looks like you've been searching around so maybe there are only a few places now selling shims, hence the high price.
In the motorbike world, high prices are common, so hand lapping the shims is also common practice & there are plenty of links about it, but as I wrote in an earlier post, there are limits to how much a shim can lapped due to the thickness of the case hardening on the shim.
Do you know how much your shims need to be reduced by? If you take a look at the sites discussing hand lapping, you can make a judgement call on how many need to be replaced & how many can be altered.

Yeah as cancunia says we only use the catcar site for the diagrams and the part numbers.

Looking the shims up on the Citroen Service Box site the price of them seem to differ depending on the thickness, as there are quite a few different thickness's listed I chose a few at random and the prices ranged between £3.17 and £15.44.

I think I would be filing them down.

You need to register to use the Citroen service box site.

Thanks for your replies, more to delve into, its true there are loads of sites selling motorcycle shims and most are expensive. I lost a shim last night I thought I put it back under the cap when we left to go to bed, but looked this morning and it is missing well I presume anyway as I am sure it would not function well without it.
You may wonder why I am bothering with the internet for shims when I have a local dealer in la Chatre but that is 52 k there and back with no bus or train service. So long way to cycle, the French are not so good at responding to emails or letters and our French is not up to explaining.

I am curious about the main cause of this problem, can we call it a defect in the design or the materials used or is it something that occurs with this type of system.

Another avenue maybe worth exploring, what diameter are the shims? Try searching for shims of that dia and see what comes up.

Well we make them 13.46/7. have tried but to no avail

Maybe time for a bit of basic French in that case. Maybe take an old shim with you.

Has anyone got information to how much one can grind/sand shims down so as not to damage the case hardening ?
