Filter in turbocharger oil feed?
#11
After a google around, cause of premature turbo failure on this engine is claimed to be build up of sludge in turbo oil feed restricting flow. Sludge is caused by incorrect oil(must be low SAPS ie low in sulphated ash, phosphorous & sulphur)presumably this would be any good brand synthetic diesel oil? Also failure to change oil at required interval & failure to follow correct drain procedure which is....Run engine to 50degC oil temperature achieved by allowing engine to idle until cooling fan cuts in. Remove filter first & drain. Then remove filler cap & dipstick then sump plug & drain for at least 10mins. Do not suck out oil mechanically. Failure to follow all this may result in sludge build up.

I can only hope that my Citroen workshop does this.

I've been using Total Quartz Ineo ecs 5w-30 from the git-go but I do suck the oil out - making sure that I get as much out as I put in the last change. Don't have access to a hydraulic lift to raise the car and there is a large plate covering the under side of the engine. Also not a big fan of crawling under a car on jack stands. Saw one slip once and it nearly killed someone (not me).

The link is here It specifically states that you should not use suction methods.

Thanks. I saw that when it was posted. Will look into periodic filter replacement. Hopefully it doesn't involve removing half the engine. PK7478, any input??

Hi Tom.

Sorry for absence and that i didn't answer to your first post Rolleyes

In fact I don't know what to say. For West Europe and UK the problem with these filters is irrelevant, because you have good quality fuel and the dealers( I think so) drain the engine oil until the end during service maintenance.
Ab. installation of additional filter i can tell you only one thing: if unit works - do not touch it.

Thank you PK. In other words, if it ain't broke - don't fix it. Will have to have a look at removing the plastic plate under the engine so I can drain the oil properly. So far I changed oil and filter at 3K and 8K. Will wish you merry Christmas in January.

I got you PK. I use only Shell V-Power diesel and so far have changed the oil and filter after the first 3000km and then again at 8000km. Will not worry about the oil line filter to the turbo. Thanks for the reply.
