Snapped timing belt......advice please.

Well hello folks.
Im new around here so be nice :wave:

Ive been offered a 2006 Berlingo with i presume the 1.9 diesel engine that has snapped the timing belt. Im familiar with rebuilding engines but wondered if anyone knew if they were interference engines or not.
ive been offered it at a very good price and its only got 25k on the clock genuine mileage so worth repairing it to sell on.
it was only just above idle when it went. What are the chances of it not having bent valves?

hopefully just be a case of re doing the static timing, but worst case i replace the motor. either way still worth it.

probably go pick it up tmr.

Hi mate.
yes the pistons to valves are interference on these from what I know. Checked auto data and says it is on timing belt replacement bit. and in haynes mentions turn engine by hand twice after replacement, which im guessing is to make sure its timed up correctly before starting engine.

Do you have a link/info to set up the static timing ie alignment marks on cam gear etc. Thanks.

I can comment on the 1.9 DW8 in my 306 that had this failure! The valves are vertical in the head so they got pushed straight up and broke the camshaft. The camshaft caps were damaged and this made the head scrap as they are machined with the head. Fix was a recon head.

I'd be amazed if you got away with just a belt and timing. The above happened at very low speed.

Belt snapped at only 25k ?

seems a very low mileage for that to happen, wonder if something else caused the belt to break.

Your Berlingo could be a 1.6 HDi or even a (very) late registered 2.0TDi.
If it definitely has no turbo-charger then it will be a 1.9D I think it may be
a fair idea to ID the engine for sure. The details will be on the log sheet.
25K is indeed a poor life for a cam-belt....has it had a new water-pump fitted at
some time perhaps? What is the state of the present water pump?
