MK1 1.9D Berlingo Glow Plug Starting Problem

I have a Berlingo 1.9D van from the year 2000. Today it wouldn't start, it turns over ok but the Glow plug warning light comes on then immediately goes out again. I changed the glow plug control unit under the bonnet be it made no difference. You can hear a relay clic on under the bonnet when the warning light briefly comes on, then I guess it releases. Any idea's? Is there another relay involved the the start procedure that requires changing. I don't have a wiring diagram other than what in in the Haynes manual but it dosn't show the glow plug circuits.

The glowplugs are likely to be burned out. Have they ever been changed?

Thanks Adam, I can start the van immediately everytime if I give a direct supply to the glow plugs. I changed the start relay and the temperature control sensor, the fault only happens on the odd occasions. I haven't chaged the glow plugs because the van will start ok on a direct supply which would suggest that the glow plugs are ok. I took the van to the local citroen garage who said that they had cleaned one of the block connectors that seemed dirty but the problem contiues.

Hi, I had a similar problem with bad starting on my old 98 mk1. This turned out to be corroded connections in IC02A connector of the engine bay. "Where is this?" I hear you say - well if I can remember it is fastened on the passenger side inner wing of the engine bay below the battery. This unscrews. I bypassed this connector by taking the connection from the fuse box straight to the glow plug relay unit.
There are two yellow wires (which come out of the fusebox) about 3mm dia marked BB10 & BB11. After these go through the IC02a connection they become black with the same markings and connect to the relay.

Thanks Rustscrat, the problem has indeed been isolated to this ICO2A having a bad connection from time to time. I will take your advice and bypass the connector. If the wires do differ from what you say I will ask your advice again, many thanks.

BTTT

HELP! - I have read the above, and it makes a bit of sense to me, But as a chef and no mechanic / auto leccy, I need further help,;

Its a 99 Berlingo

Bought it locally and the van was RUNNING when I sealed the deal, Upon it resting for 5 hours it was a pig to start and did, JUST - then a plume of smoke...

Drove home, no further issues (except when I broke for a speed hump the BATT light lightly came on, Assume die to cranking for so long to get it started 5 mins before??))

Got in the next day and it just would not start, I managed to get it shoved back using the starter motor and van IN gear, then attempted a bump start, After 3 failed attempts it JUST started and again was ok, PIG after a few hours, but did start again,

Next morning nothing again, I didnt want to bump it as I feel that the last one was a fluke!

I charged the battery, Stuck in new glow plugs, Fingers crossed.... NOTHING.

SO next is the relay??
Would it have bumped if the relay was dead??
The above diagram is foreign to me...

CAn anyone advise me on my next steps,,.. As an auto elec will cost £££ that I simply dont have.

Thanks Rustscrat. I followed your advise, found IC02A, and cleaned it with contact cleaner twice. Dried the connection with air from the compressor and assempled the vires again. Everything worked and she started like on a hot summer afternoon. (It was minus 2 Centigrades).
