So, it’s not just me then !
My 2001 bingo has a compensator which I replaced the spring on with one off eBay. Since I’ve had the van the brakes have been ok round town, but when I get up to speed on motorway, it’s scar if I have to brake hard. I have to virtually stand on the pedal. When I discovered the spring broken I thought I’d solved the problem, but no. I’ve stripped front callipers and all looks to be well.
I know my system is different from abs van, but same issue minus the rear brake problem. It just feels like the front brakes have no real power

I bought it last year, it had been off the road for a year but had been owned by an 80 yr old bloke who had it from new and regularly serviced. The front callipers were in good order, but I made sure by stripping them down. I’m wondering if my problem is with the rear brakes. I’ve put the new spring on but don’t know if it’s adjusted right. I don’t use the van much as it’s actually a Nu Venture Surf Campervan. It’s done 180,000 miles but runs like a Swiss watch.
But these brakes are crap

The brakes aint fantastic but once you get used to them they should be fine. Perhaps the pads are glazed over or poor quality you could try fitting a new set of decent quality and let them bed in and see how it stops. About the spring im sure there is a thread on the forum on here on how the spring has to be set up and I think it involved loading the van up with bags of sand. Have a search or perhaps another member can remember.

I also have MAD Spring assisters fitted to the rear, so getting the back end down may take quite a few bags of sand ! Also, as I rang a builders merchant the other day to order a bulk delivery of gravel and was told ‘there’s a 4 week waiting list, and it’s for commercial building work only’, my chances of getting sand is a bit slim. Bugger innit
I’ll try a search for the compensator setting, and I’ll order some new pads. It’s worth a try.

Check the caliper pistons move freely otherwise you'll be wasting braking effort.
