Sounds like your Lights stalk is faulty since you say that the lights do their own thing sometimes. These can be picked up fairly cheaply and there is a tutorial on this site about removing them from the steering column.

Hi, thanks for replying. This morning I sat in the car and had another try of the lights.
Now when the lights are off, the dashboard light icon is on and the lights are on.
When I turn the side lights on the dash board light icon is off, but the lights are on.
When lights are on full the dashboard light icon is on and the lights are on.
Then when I went out the indicators stopped working when the lights were switched to off, but worked when I switched the lights on!
I will get a stalk and try that.
Its driving me mad!
