What age/ileage do you guys change this?

Is a breakage dangerous to the engine?

Not sure what if any damage it would cause, but for what they cost and how easy they are to replce then if you're concerned change it mate.

What engine?

As said above, if in doubt give it a visual check (looking for the obvious such as fraying, small cracks), and change if you feel necessary. How long has it been since the last change?

Ours snapped on our 2.0 HDI once (luckily near the house), no permanent damage was done but things like power steering were lost, running off the same belt.

Iirc a mechanic told me they can catch the timing belt if you are really unlucky when they snap, someone confirm?

Sorry mine is the 1.9D DW8 non-turbo (54 plate Multispace). No A.C. but P.A.S.

No history of it having been changed - 103000 miles.

I don't mind if it snaps and there's no damage! It doesn't look all the easy to replace although I am going by the Haynes Book of Lies.

They can when they go break the cam cover, if it flaps about and its the sharp plastic of the cam cover which takes the belt out. But you have to be really unlucky, its not unknown though, just keep to your normal checks and if it looks past its best, that what it is, and change.
