How do I know if I have a particle filter
#1
Is there an easy way to tell if I have a Diesel Particle Filter ? I have a heatshield covering the turbo and downpipe is that big thing inside the shield a cat or a dpf ?

Unfortunately I'm not sure where it resides. The only thing I have seen on mine is a little light that will go on, supposedly, if it becomes clogged. So far it hasn't so I have to trust PSA that it exists. MAybe pk7478 will come along with one of his great diagrams. He'll need to know your date and model to be of help.

I don't have any expertise in this matter at all.

However, I do know that Citroen, in their literature on the Berlingo Mk 3, advertised that the 110 bhp HDi engine had a DPF.

Quote:"THERE ARE TWO PETROL OPTIONS, THE 1.6i 16V 90HP, AND THE 1.6i 16V 110HP. COMPLIMENTING THEM ARE THREE DIESELS OF 75HP, 90HP AND 110HP. THE LATTER ENGINE IS EQUIPPED WITH A DIESEL PARTICULATE FILTER SYSTEM (DPFS) FOR REDUCED ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT."

The implication is that no other Mk 3 Berlingo engines have a DPF. And if that is the case, I think one can be pretty certain that no Mk 2 Berlingo engines had a DPF.

My step-son works for a Citroen Dealership Smile and I do seem to remember him advising me to keep away form the Mark 3's with the particulate filter solely for that reason. Apparently, they are required by law now on diesel engines to stop that puff of smoke out of the exhaust on acceleration. They should last around 4-5 years but when clogged, cannot be cleaned, only repalced - and due to the elements used are very expensive. The job currently costs around £800 !!! He does reckon they'll have the problem licked in a couple of years so the cost will hopefully be lower.

In the meantime, I'd consider disabling that light!
