Strange squeak and a nasty noise in 3rd gear
#1
A few weeks ago I got a 1.9D. The car seems ok except for a couple of things. First, when things get warmed up there is an annoying squeak coming from one wheel which is directly related to road speed and direction. Turn the wheel slightly and the squeak stops. It also goes quiet with the slightest touch on the brakes. I've had the car in the air and spun the wheels and can't find anything obviously wrong. I've also tried the old wheel wobbling trick and bearings seem to be fine.

The second (and more worrying) thing that's developed is a strange noise in 3rd gear. Everything is ok unless I go up a particularly steep hill near home. Once I've gone up the hill 3rd gear seems to have a distinct whine. Change up to 4th and the whine stops. I then derive a mile on the flat in 4th and 5th, after which 3rd goes back to normal. Could it be something to do with gearbox oil levels when going up the steep hill?

finally, today I've been a couple of hundred miles. I noticed at one point a sort intermittend slipping / rattling / grinding noise. It sounded a bit like a loose plastic hub cap at first, but I couldn't identify which wheel (if any it was coming from) After going a bit further I noticed this intermittent noise only happens in 3rd.

The car seems to be driving ok, but this latest noise is a bit worrying. Does anyone have any ideas where I should start to look for the problem and how best ti eliminate different things?

Thanks in advance.

Andy.

Re the brake noise,I suggest you remove, clean, champfer the pads & apply copper grease to back of pads. Also a fluid change on an unknown vehicle is always a good idea.
First thing with the gearbox is to change the oil(less than a fiver),you may have condensation contamination in the oil.I use synthetic oil.
The 3rd noise is difficult to diagnose from a distance,I can only advise you get it checked ASAP as it will only get worse.
Good luck.

Hub bearings, CVs and intermediate bearing of right driving shaft.
This is a main problems of all old M49 and M59 Berlingos

Just a quick update. The noise after going up hill and the rattling / grating sound was found to be a lack of gearbox oil. I modified an old garden sprayer to get the oil into the box and I seemed to pump quite a lot into there, so I guess it was pretty empty. Luckily i caught it in time and all is well now.

I still have the squeak related to the steering / braking, but it doesn't seem to be delveloping any further. Wheel bearings seem to be ok. The sound doesn't start until the car is warm and goes away at speed on the motorway. I'm suspecting brake pads not quite releasing as they should, so I'll check that out next. Thanks for your help so far. Smile

You should drain all the oil from the gearbox and refill with all new oil, 1.9L as described in the handbook.
