[Engine] Engine fault repair needed
#1
I have a 2011 berlingo 1.6hdi first problem I had was warning of particle filter clogging which is strange  as my mileage is 75% motorway.
It was due a timing belt so when it was in the garage I had the mechanic check the pat fluid and it was all topped up and some dpf cleaner put through the system.
Since then I had the same warning once or twice then it changed to engine fault repair needed and now I get this and it goes to limp mode with the triangle with exclamation in it.
I had it put on a diagnostic and it recovered two faults p0494 and p0495 some kind of cooling fan control error, so the mechanic replaced the cooling fan control and I drove around for ten minutes and the fault is back.
If I run it from cold the warning does not come on till it reaches over 70 degrees on the temp gauge once it’s over that it kicks in . And will carry on doing that within 100 yards of driving or even just revving at a stand still.
I’ve spent a considerable amount of money on this and just was hoping for some advise please, if I switch off ignition and turn back on it’s cleared but only briefly once the engine is warmed up.
I haven’t seen the cooling fan run at all even running it at high revs standing still could it be that ?
I read another post somewhere about a maxi fuse that was blown which caused someone else all these problems but don’t know where this fuse is any ideas please?

Ok, without going into the whole thing, if the cooling fan can't run, it can't do a regeneration of the DPF. So it possibly hasn't done one for some time - hence the blocking warning. But, surely it would have overheated at some point - though they do run cool when idling, and need no fan on the motorway to stay at normal temps of 90. The AC would also probably throw a fault with no fan working. It cools the AC condenser (if you have AC) and runs constantly when the AC is on.

Next, the Maxi fuses are hidden under the top tray of fuses in the engine bay fusebox.

Ideally the proper Citroen diagnostic software, DiagBox, is ideal for properly diagnosing and testing systems on these cars, as standard OBD stuff is not much cop on a Citroen.

Search DiagBox on YouTube to see more about it. Some indy garages will have it, or you can buy the kit online for about £50 if you're handy with a laptop and do it yourself.

thanks very much for your reply, I’m afraid I’m not that handy on a laptop don’t even have one these days so that’s out. I’m quite happy to send to the garage to get looked at but as good as the mechanic is maybe diagnostics are not his strong point, I’m trying to gather info to steer him in the right direction so we don’t spend forever replacing parts that don’t need replaced which I’m beginning to think is where we are at the moment.
When you say the fuses are hidden under the top tray in the engine compartment does this tray just lift out of the way to expose the ones I require and is there one particular fuse I’m looking for ?
Is there a straight forward test to see if the fan is working at all ?
Someone said turning the air con on automatically switches on the fan is this correct because it doesn’t on mine or on my wife’s 308 with same engine.
Thanks for your help btw.

I think I would bite the bullet and have it into the main dealer for a proper check.

As above, I think you need to go to a Citroen specialist, a main dealer with a good rep or a good indie, to get the system scanned with Diagbox. As Zion says, there's a good chance that no DPF regens have been done due to an underlying fault. I'm not exactly sure what category of fault codes prevent the regen, but some for sure do.
While you're at the specialist, they can also force a regen and check that's working.

Main dealer sounds like a plan as these cars are complex and a basic mechanic will struggle without proper diagnostic software.

The top tray of fuses are riveted in, and needs to be mechanically removed to access the MF fuses below it. Those ones are marked dealer only but can be replaced.

I've attached the best fuse layout docs that match the B9 so maybe they will help. There are fuses for the cooling fan relay and the particulate filter. Wouldn't hurt to get these checked first but if that brings nothing then better to head, as Pete says, to a dealer and get it checked properly.

If nothing else they can force a DPF regeneration. That gets you going again and then see what else is thrown up by diagnostics.

Edit - posted at the same time as Cancunia above! All good points and advice there.

UPDATE !!

The garage couldn’t fit me in until Thursday so decided to bite the bullet and have a go, even though I wasn’t keen when drilling out rivets was mentioned to get to the fuse.
As it turned out it wasn’t riveted in once I had disconnected the battery and unclipped all the wires from the fuse box it was just clipped in place with 2 tabs one at the wing side and the other the windscreen side , all I did was pull the outer shell of the fuse box outward and the whole upper tray just lifted out far enough to reveal the fuses as shown in the photo.
Sure enough the 50 amp fuse was blown so replaced it the one second from the left in photo put it back together and took it for a drive no warning lights no faults so as far as I can see all ok now. Still don’t know if the fan is working or if the dpf is regenerating but nothing on screen to say they weren’t working.
Is there an easy way to check if the fan is working or if the dpf is regenerating or just run it and find out ?
Thanks for all the advise much appreciated.

I think the AC should turn on the fan, is the AC compressor kicking in when you turn the AC on ?

Same on the wife's 308?

Cracking, I thought it would be one of those fuses underneath. Yeah as JJ says, put the AC on full cold, and listen outside for the fan. Or lift the bonnet and look to see...

The a/c light comes on and I hear a click like the a/c engaging but will need to look for the fan switching on will do that tomorrow, as for dpf it’s been taken off and cleaned last week so probs doesn’t need a regen yet as I’ve only done a few miles .
