Check your earth connection on the display, pin8 (MC42) .
Also check with ignition on, pin7 (XE4) that there is 12v. this is supply for the Comms.

If this doesn't show anything, I would be thinking about a replacement display! alut:

Interesting you say about the earth - I found that if I have the radio on and I disconnect the aerial cable (= earth connection) I lose the radio altogether. I'm going to hook up another 12v and an earth to where they appear to be missing from and see what I get. I'll let you know what happens

Major thanks to everyone who contributed to my little dilemma of the fading display. I think everybody was in the ball park so thanks for the hints, diagrams, pictures etc etc.
Finally nailed it with Rustcrat's suggestion of the missing permanent 12v up at the display. Ran in a new one and voila! up it all came and didnt fade away at all after a few minutes. Its times like this where one can learn loads
