My-Way,anyone got it?
#1
I was just wondering if anyone went for the My-Way option when they ordered their car,and what they think of it,was it worth the money?

I was sorely tempted to tick the box when I was ordering my XTR,but with it costing around €1,000 I decided against it. I asked the dealer how often it would need updating and what the cost would be,he reckoned every 2 years at a cost of approx €150-200.
For €200 you could buy a new portable satnav every two years with all the latest maps and software!
I also had the idea that it would cost me only half of that €1,000 to install a double-din satnav dvd player.

Normally I use a basic Navigon-40 in the car for navigation,it has speed camera warning and TMC and is okay for general use.
In the truck I have a Pioneer AVIC F-500BT stand alone unit with bluetooth, this unit is hard wired into the stereo and so the phone comes through the speakers.
It cost £325 three years ago,I have updated it once which cost €150!

Last summer, before I went sick,I decided to update the truck satnav with a Navigon 70-Premium with truck software.
This unit has everything, bluetooth, speed camera, lane assist etc. and it cost me £150,and it only costs £20 for two years map updates.
It does of course have a car use option, and so I have been using this in the car,and it's very good and easy to see with it's 5" screen.

So that €1,000 for the My-Way seems awfully expensive, but not when compared to the likes of BMW,Audi etc. when their in-built satnav's cost over £3,500!

Mind you,it was the same with the 16" alloys for the XTR,I thought, shall I? No,€1,000 for four alloy wheels is a bit much.
Now they're fitting them as standard!Confusedillyme:

No, not here. I thought it was WAY too expensive for what you get. I've got a Garmin nüvi 660 with lifetime map updates (3-4 per year). I take it with me when I am renting cars out of the country on holiday.

Me neither, I did think about it then found a few references on the web and it seems that it only uses a 4 digit post code locater. It's a Tomtom Live 820 for me.

TomTom GO 820 Live for me, google search, handsfree, speed cameras, live traffic info and getting sent round the bend, but seriously I prefer to update the satnav device every couple of years as technology improves

Yes we have a MYWAY set up in our XTR. It cost £750 (before discount) if our memory serves us right.
We are both getting on a bit and found the TomTom to be a bit of a pain to read the small text etc.
The MYWAY presents things much better than the TomTom both visually and audibly in our opinion and so far hasn't fed us up the wrong road (even in Corsica) whilst the TomTom insists on sending us down the wrong road on occasion - in Majorca we were directed to the ambulance entrance to the hospital in Palma - not nice.
The traffic management feature seems to work well and is 'free for life'.
POIs are not (at present) updateable by ourselves but we haven't found any problem so far as there are claimed to be 2 million plus in the memory.
4 digit post codes - this almost made us consider not ticking the option but this has not proved to be a problem - so far at anyrate.
How often do you need to update the maps? TomTom still haven't updated the maps around here even after the local ambulance service not being able to find their way to our house to attend me some ten years ago. We advised TomTom of their error as I understand the ambulance service did also - all to no avail.
So far we haven't found a situation where we haven't been able to view the display - even in bright mediterranean sunlight - try that with a TomTom!
A bit of a gimmick perhaps but the height above sea level display is most interesting, especially in the mountains.
The Blue Tooth facility is superb.
In our view a quality product from a well respected manufacturer of GPS systems and we are very pleased that we opted for it even though it is very pricey.

Thanks for that Jim,very interesting to hear your views.

I'm not knocking the system,it's just that for less money I'd rather have a double-din installed with satnav/dvd,you can't beat something that's built in and not plonked on top of the dash.
On the other hand,a stand alone system is easy to take out and use in another car, swings and roundabouts I suppose.

If you are looking for postcode AB1 2BC it only accepts AB12 then you have to search for the road. The old Tomtom was like that. It's not the end of the world but saves some searching.

Yep, as XTR says "its swings and roundabouts" and we all have our own preferences and pick whatever suits our needs/budget etc. thats what makes it interesting-and gives us a chance to share our opinions Confusedunny: I can see the pro's and con's of different setups.
