2001 Berlingo.. Heater and Heated Rear Screen

Ok.. a few jobs left on my newly acquired  Berlingo, two of which I regard as pretty important.

First up is the heater. The gauge barely moves out of the first white segment, the blower is full or nothing (reminds me of old Peugeot's) and the heat is.. well.. disappointing. Now the last point could be because I'm used to the heater in my old V70 Volvo, but then again, when I put my hand near the outlets both on the floor and dash, its lukewarm at best. I'm thinking either someone's taken the thermostat out or the one in there is either for summer or open all the time. I'd appreciate some views on the heaters in these vehicles, good-bad-or indifferent. Also, re the stat.. where do I actually find that on the 2.0 HDi?

Second job I'm trying to sort is the heated rear screen. So far, there's no light on the dash switch, but I do think I'm hearing the click of a relay somewhere when depressing the switch. Not sure where, maybe the fuse box area. Re the fuse boxes on this car, both the owners handbook that I got with the car, and various diagrams online purporting to be the fuse arrangements for this year of Mk1- M49 Berlingo bare any resemblance to what I'm actually looking at in the car. Would really like to locate the fuse for this heated rear screen. Last but not least.. what's the technique for actually removing the dash switches on this particular model? There's a small plastic panel that encompasses the four switches, and that's easy enough to remove, but I'm stumped as to how the switches come out..

Can't answer the other questions without pulling your wiring diagrams on ServiceBox but the engine temp should hit 90° when warmed up and stay there unless you sit with the engine idling, where it will drop to 70-75 depending on outside air temps.

Sounds like you have no thermostat. It will live in the lump where the radiator top hose goes to. People usually remove the thermostat when they have undiagnosed overheating issues.

On later models the rear screen heater is controlled by....the BSI !!! Could be the same on yours. So the click would be a BSI circuit board relay in the unit below the dash on the drivers side. This also contains the second fusebox - part of the BSI computer. All things non engine related are BSI controlled and fused there.

Oh and there is no documentation available on the relay identification on the BSI...before you ask the inevitable questions. Sorry Dave.

Thanks for that Zion.. I'm feeling my way with this car and making good progress. I'm pleased. With winter coming on though I need to get the two jobs mentioned done. Especially the heater. Was out in the car this evening and my knees, legs and feet were cold. Not good!. Will pull the thermostat housing asap, and see what I've got. I'll have to do some reading on the BSI, I'm not conversant with it at all. I do find it odd that the led in the screen switch isn't working though. That's why I wanted to pull the switch from the dash.. to see if there's power there..

In the Berlingo, all buttons and switches are inputs to the BSI computer, and all outputs to devices come from it. I put up some stuff on the BSI in the "how to" section or the "B9" section, at the top in the sticky pink bits (O O). Have a look and read some stuff to get an understanding of how it works.

When you press any button, you're asking for the BSI to turn that device on. Also the internal fusebox is part of the BSI top section. Since it's not a simple battery > switch > device setup when the car uses a multiplexer (BSI) then the switch may not light up because the BSI is not turning it on, as it detects a fault with the window element, or the fuse had simply gone.

The engine heating should be simple and I appreciate where you're coming from as no heating is no joke in the winter. I'd get some sealant, ready to make a gasket, then pull the top of the thermostat housing and see if it's fitted, I expect not and you can then replace it and seal up the housing again. There are maybe videos on YouTube, always check there first. Search "2.0 HDi thermostat replacement" for example.

The thing that really matters about it, is that it's a full blown electronic PC with memory and software, inputs and outputs, it contains the immobiliser section and controls all things that aren't engine parts. It has all the relays soldered to its upper circuit board along with replaceable fuses, many many plugs, and the bottom circuit board is the CPU, memory, software section etc. Apart from the fuses, it's not something that can be tinkered with unless you're an electronics engineer / tech, and it can't be swapped with a replacement without extensive reprogramming and even then it has to be the exact model and series to be useable after virginisation and reprogramming.

That virginisation & reprogramming is a specialist task involving reading and copying EPROM chips on the main board.

If you hear a click from operating the button for the rear screen, then it's hopefully just a fuse but also could be the relay itself. I'll have a look tomorrow to get you a wiring diagram and a proper fuse layout.

My M49 is a 1.9 so might be different, but when the heater was working properly I always found it to be pretty good - I even used to use it to reduce the engine temperature a bit when I had an engine temp management issue many years ago (the heater fan on full blast was quite powerful, if a little noisy) .

Well.. one positive result at least. As I suspected, the thermostat was missing. Put in a new one that opens at 83 degrees C and voila. Temp now is reading constant.. just below half way on the gauge, and the heat from the blower is toasty. Just what I ordered, so I'm very pleased.

Just like my old Peugeot's though, the blower has only one speed.. FULL BLAST! Maybe somewhere along the line I might take a look at it, but for now I'm content with the heat.

No luck with the heated rear screen yet though.. zilch.. I've feeling I ain't gonna be so lucky there!

A sort of result with the washer motor, after fitting a new one. Having said that, there seems a hell of a delay from activating the stalk and water appearing at the screen. Almost as if all water in the tubing has drained back to the reservoir. No non return valve in Pump or line??? Just putting it out there..
