Does the later system have a shut off valve for the heater matrix?
I remember older cars having shut off valves (Cortina's & the like) but then they disappeared and the heater matrix became permanently fed, I think this was supposed to be to stop the matrix becoming clogged up (not sure) but I never though it was a good idea, better to shut it off if you don't need the heat you would have thought.

I will check for sure, I'm certain I saw it mentioned in the Haynes. In case I'm totally wrong, I better look again! It just seems to make sense that an electric flap would be cheap and easy to make but a variable valve would need a control cable.

If I remember correctly the cable that operated the shut off valve was a solid stiff piece of wire inside the outer cover and when you moved the heat control slide inside the car from cold to hot it was quite stiff to move but then it seemed to go slack at the end of the travel, it felt like you had broke it, so you had to feel for the heat at the vents to see if it was working
No such fun with this push button electronic rubbish with stepper motors and the like...

Haha yeah I totally agree. Electronics is the most unreliable bit of any machine.

I ordered a replacement from eBay but it’s staggered not side by side.
Anyone know where I can get the correct pipe?
Thanks
Looking up the 1.9d on
CATCAR it appear to show the staggered version.
What stops the staggered version fitting?

When I disconnected my matrix from the cooling system last year, I took the hoses off where they join the back of the block, but left them connected to the ports in the bulkhead and tied them out of the way, as more than one Citroen garage had advised that I wouldn't be able to buy a new connector unit if/when I want to reconnect the matrix (and it's not possible to disconnect the hoses without breaking the unit).
Try a breakers yard? Though not sure how feasible it'll be to remove the connection unit, seeing as you'll have to keep hoses attached otherwise it'll also probably break.
Probably a daft suggestion, but could you even fix the broken connection using Tiger Seal or similar?

Not enough clearance to the top of the bulkhead/skittle pan to get both in
