Gearstick gaiter change

Good morning from Suffolk. First forum I've ever joined, so apologies in advance for any communicative faux pas! Just got a new (to me) '09 multispace XTR. Could anyone out there advise how to change the gearstick gaiter (this one's split around the top)? Presumably the gear knob has to be removed, but it seems fixed rock solid to me, so my attempt has stalled straight away! Thanks...

I wanted to change the gearknob on my mk2 and the Haynes manual says just pull it off. Yeah, right!!!! In the end I hand to hacksaw it off.

The end of the gear change shaft is knurled and the gearknob pushed onto it - Hacksaw works.

Thanks, Knobbywobbly, but I didn't really want to take a hacksaw to my new dearly beloved, and I had a horrible feeling if I pulled the gear knob too much the whole stick would come adrift! Anyway, have sorted it now by leaving gear knob well alone, prising the fixing ring up and cutting the stitching on the gaiter (and also the cable tie securing it to the gear stick) to enable painless removal. New leather gaiter had its stitching similarly cut to enable fitting over the gear knob, then restitching afterwards. New cable tie to secure new gaiter, position fixing ring, job done! Time for a cuppa!

Nothing to do with Berlingos but his reminds me of years ago whilst in the Army. I was with another guy who was driving an old series 3 land rover around the barracks. As he went to change gear the gear stick snapped off.

As we were only yards from the workshop we go out, I followed him as he walked in the workshop and the workshop boss happened to be stood at the service counter. Now I thought he was going to ask for assitance in recovering the vehicle. No, he help up the gear stick and said "you couldn't just weld a land rover on the end of this could you?" The workshop officer didn't have a sense of humour and it didn't go down very well but it was funny at the time. :lol::lol:

I know this reply is no use to you now,but for the benefit of others if you put the stick into second and pull it does come off,there is a white plastic part left on the on the end of the stick.I have recently changed mine with a leather one from e bay item no 310353402971.Hope this helps someone

Open an adjustable spanner enough to clear the stick, put it under the gear knob and hit it with something should get it moving. I had a Mk1 Escort and the gear lever was held in (mostly) by a plastic nut which sometimes used to give up the ghost leaving you coasting in neutral or stood at a junction woth a line of traffic behind you. Sad
So where does this bit go then ?

I believe on my mk2. If I twist hard on gear knob to left it then lifts up.

Am I right in saying the gaiter on the MkIII is the same as the Saxo?
