As some of you may be aware,as of 3/1/2012 any device capable of warning of speed cameras has become illegal when driving through France, this includes not only dedicated camera detectors, but also satnav's that include a speed camera database.

I updated my Navigon satnav a few weeks ago,and all speed camera data for France was removed during the upgrade.
If you are caught with such a device,it could mean a fine of up to €1,500 as well as confiscation of the device.
The French are even removing the warning signs that are seen along the road to tell you that you are approaching an area controlled by speed cameras.

The date hasn't been confirmed yet,but probably from 1/7/2012 a breathalyzer kit will need to be carried in the car in France, well, two in fact, because if you do indeed use it,you'll need a spare to show the jolly Gendarmes when they stop you.
If you cannot produce the kit, then it's a €9 fine.
Kits will be available from ferry terminals and Eurotunnel and will be priced at a few pounds for a single use kit.
However, not all kits will be accepted by the French, only ones that are marked NF will be legal as these are marked up to 0.05%,the legal drink drive limit in France, whereas most UK kits are measured to 0.08%

Honestly, the French make it up as they go.......

Thanks for the update. Was aware of both but doesn't hurt to publicize the new rules. Here in Switzerland if your navigation device has a radar trap database the fine is CHF10000 (£7000) plus confiscation of the device.

I hate the bast--rds when they always go after the motorist...but on the other hand at least they have the balls to take action, this country doesnt. A kinda double edege feeling towards this one.

I hear TomTom is removing speed camera database for use in France but that there should be a Danger Zone database available in near future
