2008 1.6hdi vtr buying advice
#1
Hi,

New to this site and so glad to have found it!

Im thinking of buying a 2008 1.6hdi vtr and will be having a look at it this weekend but I was hoping for a little advice on what to look for when viewing and test driving it.

Its done 60,000 miles, and im told its an ex motability car. No log book but the dealer can get a print out of the service history for me (does that sound dodgy?)

From my research the service interval is 12,500 miles, and I would have thought the timing belt would have needed to be replaced or checked around 50,000 miles? Does anyone know what the timing belt interval actually is?

thanks

You need a mark 3 owner who can check their service book.

My 2004 model recommended a new timing belt at 80K if I recall, but I had it done earlier, so I suspect it will be in excess of 50K recommendation, but it's always wise to do it well before.

Ask them to do it as part of the deal.

This isn't advice its just random thoughts.
The dealer may want to minimise the number of previous owners by not having himself listed - thats probably fair enough but how long will it take for you to obtain a new log book and will you be able to drive it while your waiting?
Does he think he is doing you a favour by getting a service printout history - really he is doing himself a favour by making this free to view. A service printout may indicate whether the timing belt has been renewed.
Have a look a the tyres including the spare if they look worn get ready to grumble.
If you are dead keen on the motor let him know that you are prepared to enter negotiations.
Hope I haven't just typed a lot of crap.
Good Luck!

According to manual 1.6 hdi timimg belt changed at 112,500 miles/ 10 years under arduous conditions or 140,000/10 years under normal conditions. Get HPI check done and contact Motability for service history etc, bought ex-lease car many years ago and got service print-out. Would want log book asap though. Ex Motability cars are "usually " well looked after and serviced etc.according to makers recommendations.

You really need proven service history to check oil/filter has been changed at ever 12,500 mile interval otherwise you may get premature turbo failure. Cambelt change interval is 160k miles or 10yrs so no worries about that yet. The 160k miles interval is in my handbook for 2009 1.6hdi.

Hi

Thanks for the replies. I gave motability a ring to confirm if the car is ex motability, but they told me they weren't able to give that information due to client confidentiality, and once the car has been moved on, they don't keep records of the service history. I don't really believe this so ill try again tomorrow morning just in case.

Ive done a cartell.ie check and all seems ok, the dealer also said they would be happy to do a HPI check when I view the car if I'm interested in it. The dealer has just faxed me a print out of the service history, serviced roughly every 12,500 miles at the same approved motability citroen dealer each time (listed on the motability web site). Last service was 57,107 miles. The front anti-roll bar link was replaced at 38,000 miles and the front brake pads have been replaced twice so far

- does that sound ok?

(Just checked on the fax that they sent me, it seems to be a print off from mfldirect.co.uk which looks like an ex motability car supplier so I guess that confirms that.)

Hi bloo and welcome to the Forum:wave:

Beg to disagree with Timing Belt change, believe it should be at 60,000 miles, told this after mine failed at 50,000+.

I have an ex Motabilty car, make sure that the one you are are looking at still has all it's tools, jack, spare wheel etc, Radio and Owners Manuals, Spare Key and importantly the 'KEY SECURITY CARD' only available from Citroen and VERY expensive to buy.
Without it you cannot get replacement keys.

I have been told that some Motabilty cars do seem to lose the above essential equipment somewhere along the line when going to Auction.

Got the same reply when I spoke to Motabilty, BUT found the Garage mine had been serviced at after finding a receipt inside the car and checked out service record, *some of it was missing from the Citroen Database.

Just an observation, but 60k seems a high mileage for a motability car, most I have seen average less than 10k a year, and lots a lot less, there are obviously those that do higher mileage, but the excess mileage charges usually make it very expensive for motobility customers. no log book shouldn't be too much of a problem, but it does start alarm bells ringing re the history of the car. there seem to be plenty around, so if in doubt walk away!

Checked manual again and def says 112,500 or 140,000 miles-same info on other websites-but check with Citroen is possibly the best option.

Thanks all,

I found another nearby to check as well, this one is the same year but 27000 miles. 60000 miles does sound high.

Over here (Ireland, and NI is where the car is) cars do seem to have higher mileage than the UK. I was thinking maybe due to the area being a bit more rural and perhaps the previous owner was commuting to one of the nearby larger towns/cities. I was thinking at least as its a diesel its been well driven, and not used to short trips as I hear lots of short journeys arent good for diesel engines.
