Front Indicator not working
#11
Hi, going back to AW's post, When you look at the base of your new bulb, how many silver contacts has it got??
It should only have one central one and the locating pins should be offset at about 5 or 7 o'clock depending on how you look at it. Confusedcratch:

Hi andy-womble yes it's the right replacement, it's an offset pin type and thats what I've replaced it with, the normal type wouldn't fit in:-) So brodfather are you saying the corrosion is in the headlight unit between the bulb mounting and the multi-plug? The connection on the multi-plug seems fine as all the other things it attaches to are working, i.e. front headlight & sidelight.

On my model (2002 mk1) the headlight and the indicator are mounted together but are seperately wired, no large multiplug. The wiring loom that goes to the indicator has a small two pin plug that unplugs from the indicator bulb holder and the corrosion was in there, easier got at if the headlight assy./idicator light assy. is taken out. I can see the connector through a small hole in the inner wing and actually touch it. It may be that your model is different from mine

Well rustscrat, when I look at the bulb that has been in there since I've had it (about a year), and has been working fine for all that time, it is a bulb with a single central pin and the pins are offset. So that is the type I have replaced it with, and the holder wouldn't accept a non offset bulb, would it?
and sorry brodfather, mine is a 2003 MkII, so the headlamp unit is all enclosed in one unit.

Many apologies - Just had a look at mine and guess what, yep these are offset pin types. This is the first time I have seen ones like these.
I was thinking of the stop/tail light ones. :brickwall:Confusedillyme::whistle:

Have amended previous post.

What you need now is a multimeter of some type to see if you have 12v at the headlamp connection.
This is pin 6 which is a pink wire with No.288 marked on it.
Measure this to earth with the indicator on.
Let us know what you get.

Hi, sorry I haven't replied in a while, but now I need to get it sorted, as I have my MOT on Thursday 15th, I tested the pink wire with the connector disconnected, and the voltage was fluctuating, between 3v, 4v, 5v, 6v, 7v, 8v, never the same sequence and and never reaching 12v, is this normal? I have noticed that when I turn on the indicator the first time I drive it, the indicator thinks for a split second that it's working properly, but then it goes into super fast flashing (SFFM) mode? after that it always goes straight in to SFFM:-) (can't work out the smileys)

Hi What a merry dance electrics lead us.
It may be a shot in the dark but did you actually take out the other bulbs (Side and rear flashers) and physically check they were ok? ie no bad connections.
Ive had cases of SFFM when the brake light bulbs /rear light cluster were not earthing properly and when the brake was pressed the indicators started SFFM. earthing back through the indicator warning lights on the dash.
I would take out all the bulbs in the unit and try it with just the indicator bulb in and see.

If you have tested the pink wire with a digital multimeter they do tend to lag when testing a pulsed voltage !
As you are measuring a pulsed voltage ( 0 to 12 to 0 Volts in approx 1 Second) the above readings would appear OK off load.

If your front Sidelight /Headlights are OK it proves that the Earth (wire M2702 - Colour Green /Yellow) to the headlight is OK, this is pin 8 on headlight connector. Your front RHS Indicator uses the same earth wire M2702 !
I suspect you have a poor connection between the muliplug headlamp connection and the connection to the indicator bulb.

Hi, I've been putting of replying to this thread, after all of your very useful advice, on how to fix my indicator. It wasn't until a I read BlueBingo's reply, which made think I know, I'll bypass the connections made internally on the bulb and splice a cable into the loom at the pink wire and ground the other side to the chassis, It worked! Until I put the bulb back into it's position in the headlamp, it stopped? so here's where the reason for not replying sooner arises. The metal contact inside the bulb holder that attaches to the positive connection of the bulb was bent and so wasn't making contact. Im sure I checked this a part of my initial diagnosis, but some how, didn't realise how bent out of position it really was. So then I thought, what if i try it as its supposed to be, not spliced in running on the multiplug connection, and it worked! So again, I'm sorry for wasting your time and mine, on a simple 30 second job instead of a month and 4 days one. Anyway it went through the MOT, only costing me 52 quid plus the testing fee, and not a hint of problems with the indicator:-)
