Citroen Select,just what is checked?
#1
My 58 XTR was bought through a main agent on 25th February and is a Citroen Select Approved Used vehicle. Its been back for a new dashboard bulb, missing clip on a rear head rest, faulty rear door, missing sun shade clips on both rear doors, coolant level low and a leaking exhaust just below the turbocharger. Now I know some of those may be hard to detect in daylight (dashboard light) but what exactly is checked? The exhaust leak was easy to see as there was a covering of soot on the turbo and the heat shield was black on the inside where it could be seen. If I saw it then a technician should have noticed if doing a visual inspection. I have just checked the tyre pressures and realy should have done before this I know. However the fronts were at 2 and 2.1 bar and the rear at 2 and 2.8!!! I thought they would have been checked as part of the process of used approval. Am I just expecting too much?

Too much to expect if you had bought it at you local auction but not if you've paid extra for the "select" service
List your complaints to firstly the dealer then if neccessary to Citroen UK.

But be careful if its your only dealer.

I had a MAJOR problem with City Link couriers -the depot didnt want to know so I wrote to their head office. They were all too interested but luckily the depot had a complete change of management before the chimps could exact their petty revenge.

There give each of the tires 3 kicks.

They make sure it starts

Make sure the horn works,

They top up all the fluids, (just to be sure you don't notice its leaking before its sold)

They also give it a good wash.

Citroen select at its best.

Never forget a newish bmw bought from a bmw main dealer was leaking so much coolant it had to be topped up every 2 weeks, so they had to have known

Yes, I think they spend more on the valet than on any other checks. Their scratch cover stuff is pure magic for a few days then it wears off!!! Or at least it has on mine.

Take all main dealer garbage like that with a pinch of salt.

I bought a vauxhall about 10 years ago that was 3 years old and supposedly had a 10,000 point check bla bla bla. I was buying via a loan from work and one requirement was that the car had a full independent inspection.

I paid £85 for a local chap to inspect it. After a very long list of inadequacies, the car ended up with new brakes, several minor repairs and one area re-sprayed, a new tyre, a new aerial and numerous bits and bobs correcting.

Full checks - load of rubbish! Sales jibberish to convince you to buy!!

I'm sorry but if you are shall we say naive enough to believe the sales patter given about paintwork protection then you were easily taken in. When we bought ours from a Citroen owned dealership, as opposed to a franchised main dealer, the sales-person type chappie tried all that crap but gave up when he could see I wasn't biting.

We had a couple of issues under the Select used warranty but we live in Stoke and the vehicle was purchased from Manchester basically because there was nowt about locally.

The Select warranty is supposed to be available through all main dealers but the service receptionist at the local dealers (Evans Halshaw, Stoke on Trent) had never even heard of Select and all they wanted to do was charge me in the region of £50.00 for a diagnostic test if no fault found....tossers similar scenario with the one further afield in Stafford. Needless to say I shan't be going to either of those places for my aftersales work.

In the event, a phone call and conversation with the service manager at Manchester Citroen (South), a trip to their premises, vehicle left overnight and F.O.C. courtesey car, repairs done to my satisfaction and left there a happy bunny....

Excuse me andy-wombe, but I am not "naive" and "easily taken in". I DID NOT say that I had agreed to their paintwork protection stuff, far from it. I said scratch cover stuff which is entirely different. They tried to sell me loads of other stuff as well that I didnt go for. If your such an expert perhaps you should come with me next time to show just how an expert buyer such as yourself does it.!!!!

I remember that one- although it was nearer 114 as I recall!
That said ,you can quickly make up the number with little effort.

If you are so clever and vocal as you make out then you do not need me to come with you.....

By my own admission I am far from an "Expert" and have been "taken in" myself in the past.

It is a jungle out there my friend and having worked previously in the retail motor trade I am well aware of what allegedly goes on behind the scenes.....

Yes, I slightly exaggerated by a mere 9886 but the checks and claims that the car would be spot on, were rubbish. The pads on the car I bought had 6 months wear left in them at tops. Hardly setting me up for a trouble free period of driving!!

Buying second hand from a main dealer is sadly no guarantee that the car will be in good order.
