1.5 Blue HDi info: oil and chain
#21
According to this news:
https://www.largus.fr/actualite-automobi...79390.html
(see the chapter at the end)
the 5W30 oil is supposed to prolong the lifetime of timing chain.

Assuming that's correct (will check with my local dealer), I wish they'd make up their sodding minds - first 0W30 or 0W20, then 0W20 only, now 5W30.

According to that article, the 5W30 oil is recommended in preference to 0W30 in order to "solve the cold lubrication problem", which seems counter-intuitive to me - wouldn't 0W30 (or 0W20) provide better lubrication at low temps?

I was told in December by citroen dealer to use the 0W-20 i paid for it doing 6 weeks ago but now the total website says use 5W-30 for my 69 Plate van and only use 0W-20 for things from 2023-02

Engine (D) (YHW (DV5RE)) (Passenger van & from 16886, or Van & From 2023-02)
TotalEnergies Quartz Ineo Xtra First 0W-20

Engine (D) (YHW (DV5RE)) (Passenger van & to 16885, or Van & 2019-01 to 2023-01)
TotalEnergies Quartz Ineo RCP 5W-30

I went into my local dealership today and had a long conversation with a guy in the parts department.  I said I wanted a quote for some engine oil but also wanted clarification about the changing oil spec, as described above.  His response was that only 0W20 oil was recommended for these engines - they received a bulletin about it 3 or 4 years ago, and hadn't received any new info. He added that changing oil spec wasn't generally a good idea.   When he fed my vehicle registration number into his system, it again recommended 0W20.

I queried why other information was being given elsewhere and mentioned the French article that hubber linked to.  He couldn't explain the info given elsewhere, but repeated that only Citroen could be sure to have the correct spec, as other sources don't get the Citroen bulletins. Eventually, after more querying by me (just thinking aloud really) , I decided the 5W30 recommendation must be an error or misinformation, so I said I'd buy the 0W20.  He went out the back and then, after quite a long time, came back and said that, in response to all my querying, he'd made his own enquiries with colleagues and - cue fanfare - one of them (presumably a manager) said they had received a message from Citroen at the start of this month, but hadn't generally circulated it, hence the chap dealing with me didn't know.  He showed me a printout that repeats the info from the Total website that Sean described above i.e. vehicles up to code 16885 should use 5W30.

He then added - and this might explain some of the confusion and/or lack of information - that this isn't any old 5W30 oil, it's new and they haven't yet got any in stock. It might be a month or so before they have it (they did have 5W30 oil in stock, but it's the wrong kind).  So we left it there and I said I'll contact them in a month or so.

I know this is a bit of a lengthy description of my meeting, but I was there for about 2 hours, and I think going into detail sheds some light on the situation. The guy who was dealing with me thought they'd been some kind of cock-up - not just this last month, but going back in time, though that's obviously just his take on it.

response from total oils

Thank you for your query. As of January 2024, the new product Quartz Ineo RCP 5W-30 was introduced and is recommended for 1.5L Diesel Blue HDi engines on vehicles manufactured between 2017 to 2023. This product holds a new crankcase oil specification (FPW 9.55535-03) and was developed and approved for such models to provide robust protection of the camshaft chain (RCP = Robust chain protection).

For engines manufactured at the end half of 2023, Quartz Ineo Xtra First 0W-20 engine oil is suitable. However, as your vehicle is 2019, the Quarts Ineo RCP 5W-30 product is recommended, which will provide better protection of the camshaft chain.

I hope this clarifies things for you, if you have any further questions please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Couple of responses from total oils

I’m afraid that this answer isn’t help you as you want.
The only solution in the UK right now is to go/call to a closest dealership of Stellantis Group- Peugeot, Citroen, Vauxhall… and check if they have this product in stock. If they have it, is only in bulk – 208L barrels, the small packs of 1L and 5L are due to come in the next couple months.

To go and search let’ say to a Factor- 100% I can confirm that you couldn’t find it. All my customers (factors) they do not have access on this product for the moment.

Sorry that I cannot help you more.

Thank you and have a nice day.
Cristian

This product is quit new into our Range, and for the moment we have it only on 208L’s for the dealerships.
Is due to come also the smaller units into UK, but will take a little bit more to reach to the Factors and to the end users.
