Why did you buy a b'lingo Mutli?
#21
I had an Audi A4 1.8T sport (2002) to haul the 2 kids (2 1/2 and 8 months), 2 dogs and the better half around. But 26 MPG is not good at all.

So I decided to look at all cars available that would get 2 kids in and out easy, be able to carry 2 large dogs, is fuel efficient and cheap to tax.

After 2 weeks looking it came down to a Berlingo, i was going to get a Mk2 but a Mk3 2008 VTR with 19k on the clock came up for £8500 from a local Citroen Dealer. (4 new 4-season tyres fitted, 6 month tax, service, set of mats, additional 1 year Citroen warranty) I could not go wrong.

So the Berlingo is now part of the family, and i think it is a fantastic car!

The car was imported from Singapore by a bloke who normally imports Japanese sports cars. He'd spotted the Berlingo (named 'Lily' by my wife) out there and bought it because it was cheap and he wanted it for his family.

The leather was fitted out there, apparently quite normal for 'ordinary' cars to be so fitted to increase peoples perceptions of the owners!

It also has two 'picnic' seats in the boot which is quite cool. Can't transport anyone on them of course (no 'belts)

Berlingos in Singapore, eh?

That takes me back.

As I was saying, we bought our first Berlingo in early 2002. And, as I was saying, I didn't recall seeing any Berlingos on the road before we bought ours. They were somewhat unusual in those days. And while we waited for ours to come from the factory, I kept my eyes peeled for them.

It just so happens that while we were waiting for Citroen to make and import our vehicle, we went off on holiday to . . . Singapore. While we were there, I remember, rather to my surprise, spotting a couple of Berlingos.

Interestingly enough, we were told that purchase tax on cars in Singapore was very high - that a VW Beetle, for example, would have cost the equivalent of about £50,000. Public transport was good and inexpensive, so nobody really needed a car, and only the rich could afford them. As a consequence, there was no market for "budget brands". The people who bought Berlingos in Singapore would have been pretty wealthy, and putting in leather seats would have cost peanuts compared to the price of the car. The rules also apparently meant that it was not economic to keep old cars, so after a few years, most Singaporean cars tended to end up in Malaysia.

Yes, that pretty much tallies with what I remember the vendor telling me - and which was why he was able to import into the UK reasonably new cars from there.

The car still has its Singaporean tax disc holder thingy.

Have been wondering if it was used a taxi while out there mind you - the bonnet and tailgate are slightly darker than the rest of the car and I have wondered if they have once been black!

Based on my very limited knowledge, I would doubt that it was used as a taxi. I seem to recall that the rules that made it uneconomic to run older cars didn't apply to taxis. That's not to say that taxis were very old - but they were older than other cars. Hence there would be no need to get rid of a relatively young vehicle if it was serving as a taxi.

In addition, I don't recall them having black as a colour for taxis out there in the way that we have in this country.

i've driven Volvos for the past few years. after swapping a rather thirsty T5 for a 2.0l V40, I took up kayaking, so when i decided to replace the V40, I looked at vans to convert into a camper.
My mate has a T4 Transporter he's currently converting into a camper, looked at them but thought with the price of fuel, and the fact I have 4 kids to cart around during the week, I need something already fitted with seats. A quick dig online told me Kangoo's don't have as much space in the rear as others in that class (plus I've had bad experiences with renault in the past) so I narrowed it down to a choice of Berlingo / Partner or Doblo. I'm a bit dubious of Fiats plus all the ones in my price range were ex taxis. Then I spotted an X reg Berlingo, 160k on the clock but with full service history and ALL the previous Mot certs.
Had it a week so far and I love it. Filled it up today and worked it out at 40.4mpg (mostly in high winds or with a kayak on the roof)
Going to crack on with modifying it into a weekend camper over the next few weeks
(Could do with a new drivers seat, does anyone know which other seats fit - could do with it being a bit higher up as well)

Hi, I also had a T4 westfalia camper, 2.5 petrol auto, 15 mpg, so converted to lpg, 30 mpg, slept 4 fully equiped, fridge /freezer, cooker, rear heater, every mod con it was great but an expensive machine to run. YOU MADE A WISE CHOICE, HAVING OWNED BAY WINDOWS, t5`S AND t4`S SO like you after research the berlingo gave me almost same, we have slept in back, cooked in it. AND i GET 50 TO GALLON, PLUS WITH CARAVAN ON BACK, TWO MOUNTAIN BIKES AND 2 CANOES ON TOP i GET APPROX 36 MPG.
