egr valve,vacuum operated butterfly
#1
Hi
Been having problems with loss of power, thought it was egr valve, tried to replace ,but new one has not got a vacuum operated butterfly on it.Further poking around found that if vacuum pipe is disconnected from original the van works fine.Basically the butterfly was staying closed so couldnt breath.Do i need this butterfly to work??
Cheers Jeff

In a word - No.

It's a device to reduce emissions, but serves to clog up the inlet manifold and ports with soot.

You'll find it will drive more smoothly without it, you mpg will be better and there may be a negligible improvement to performance. You may get the MIL and very occasionally go into limp mode, if so reconnect and about 5 good starts later it will reset itself.

I've had mine disconnected for ages no problems

And do i just leave the pipe dangling so to speak, lol.

The butterfly diverts the exhaust gas into the manifold. It will be controlled by the ECU via a solenoid.

Find the solnoid and disconnect it leaving the butterfly in place - does this work? If yes, problem solved. If not, can you easily remove the pipe in it's entirety, make up blanking plates for any orifices (!) from any bits of metal - ends of bean cans etc.

Let us know how you get on.

basically what i have done is disconnect one of the rubber pipes, and is now working fine as butterfly is open, just wondering what i would need to replace to get butterfly to open you can see butterfly closing when revving, and i think when you rev it should open.but yes it is working fine.
