This will be the strut top mount. I had exactly the same thing on mine. Had the bloody thing in bits 3 times before we noticed the wear on the top mount. There's a picture on a thread somewhere on here that I posted of the wear pattern and what to look for on the top mount, but I can't find the thread!

On mine it was the actual mount itself, the bearing was ok.

to be honest i am not too sure, its just that someone mentioned a lug on strut and that this was the problem on theres, i just dont seem to have time or even be bothered to strip it down and look and the noise is everyday life now lol
I did mine myself and know this lug of which you speak. In all seriousness, you'd have to be seriously ham-fisted and violent to get the strut in with the lug in the wrong place. I checked this when I had the top-mount rattle, and couldn't actually see how it would be possible to get the strut in with the lug not in it's slot.
