My first Berlingo was a 1.6 Petrol (Mk 1). Last year I rented a 1.6 diesel Mk 3 in France, which was very new, and found it rather clattery at low revs. Then last month I replaced my petrol Berlingo with a four year old Mk 2 diesel 1.6. Interestingly enough, I find it very refined.
Do diesels get smoother after their first few thousand miles?

I bought a new berlingo van with the 1.6 75 bhp. I think it's quite smooth (at working temperature) but most of the noise is probably from the injectors. I have covered 700 miles in 2 weeks.

A little advice , it helped me , i also haed the more harsh or rattling sond in my engine at above 3000 rpm , after i serviced it and put the Mobil 1 5w30 esp oil into the engine it seems alot quieter . The rattels are most likely a result of a lean engine software , i was suprised when the rattels was reduced so much after the new oil , mybe Mobil 1 oil has a better ability to cushion engine parts then the Total oil ?
