USB charging socket
#1
Hi guys

I wanted to share you guys with a little mod I am working on.

It seemed to me like a good idea to install a USB charging port next to the rear view mirror.
A USB charging port in this location could use to power all kind of front windshield mounted equipment like GPS video camera etc with having the advantage of using a shorter than normal USB cable.

It happens to be that in my MK2 berlingo I have a rectangle plastic piece next to the upper mirror that can be used for that purposes.

BOM:
Panel mount USB socket from eBay
7805 analogue +5Volt voltage regulator from ebay
DC socket from ebay (optional)
Small heat sink, Wires and Heat shrink

7805 wiring

Attached below is picture of the finished product.
Heat sink is connected to the regulator using a heat conductive glue, other heat sink can use a nut + bolt
I also added a DC socket for direct 12VDC connection.

Later today once installed I will upload more pictures with the final look in my berlingo.

Thx
Samuel.

Hello folks, long time lurker - first time poster!
This is my recently installed effort.

I used one of these http://www.7dayshop.com/7dayshop-power-u...ptor&sl=sl wired via a fuse and switch to the plug that supplies that useless map light! (on the right of the panel)
I removed the chrome cap on the end and was able to solder the supply wire to the spring inside. This means there is no issue with clearance when the panel is replaced. I probably dont need the fuse because the current draw is negligable.
An easy solution without having to faff about too much. I've also fitted the same just below the headlight adjuster to the left of the steering column
Hope you like it

Cheers OJ. Like the original poster I wanted to connect my speed camera detector without the wires trailing all over the dash and this does the job.
