... 1.9d General advice wanted...
#1
Hi I'm new to berlingos and have a 2005 1.9D van.

I am hoping that people can give me some guidance on what to look out for in terms of what goes wrong as I'd like to get on top of things and catch things before they fail.
Are there any little gems of knowledge that you would like to share ?
I'm pretty handy with spanners and can do most things mechanical but am a bit out of touch with the electrical side of things.
I don't have a manual yet or even an owners handbook as the van came without one, is there any info on site to download to help me ?

All advice welcomed.
Geoff.

D'oh.... I've just noticed a download section at the top of the Series 2 Page ....

I can email you a copy of the Partner owner's handbook if you like. PM me and I'll see what I can do. I'm away on holiday soon so be quick or wait for week.

Hello Ron that is very generous of you, I'd be delighted to have the manual.
I am in Bridgend South Wales so not far and it would be a good excuse for a day trip out with my wife, she enjoys both Monmouth and Ross on Wye.
I'll P.M. you my contact details and perhaps we can arrange a time to suit yourself.
Many thanks,
Geoff.

Hello crickleymal again a most generous offer and yes I'd be delighted to have a copy of the handbook from you. I'll P.M. you my details.
Don't worry if you cannot find the time before you go away.
Many thanks,
Geoff.

Thanks both

Hello Ron,

I couldn't seem to find the P.M. section on your profile so then I looked at my profile and noticed mine wasn't there either.
I've updated my profile now so perhaps you could contact me and we can then make arrangements for collection.

Hi Geoff,
1. watch out for broken front suspension springs
2. screenwash pump minifuse (10a - engine compartment in mine)
3. early indicator/lights switch units were inclined to develop faults, you may be ok with an '05.
4. a gradual drop in brake fluid level first noticed on sharp downhill braking which generates a beeping warning sound. In time the causes was found to be leakage from a rear wheel cylinder.
5. the air filter tends to be overlooked on account of it being a minor pain to replace.
cheers.

I think I may have 4. on mine. I just had to top up the fluid after a couple of beeps whilst braking.

5. What? Piece of cake. Undo the pipe leading from the grille to the air box (M6 nut IIRC), twist to remove. Undo four screws and the lid of the air cleaner box pops off.

4. For recent MOT brake fluid leaking from cylinder onto shoes was an issue - garage soaked shoes in some kind of brake solvent. After picking the car up and driving for 5 miles I was getting burning smell/smoke from the relevant rear wheel. Smell went away and the car was fine from then on.
5. Looks like a far easier way in - thanks.
cheers.

I'd be worried about a garage that did that. Soaking brake shoes in solvent is seriously not recommended. Although I have done in on my bike's rear brake but then who uses a motorbike's rear brake anyway?

You're welcome, looked obvious to me but I do try to make life easy for myself if I can. I hate having to wrestle with something.

I've received the email / handbook Malc, looks fine. I'm quite happy with this and won't need a higher resolution.
Thanks again and have a good holiday.
Geoff.

Thanks all for the other info I'm starting to get a better idea of what to watch out for.
If anyone else would like to contribute their experiences I'd be pleased to hear them.

Geoff.
