Knock on starting engine

Having just had a new clutch and front wheel bearing fitted I thought I'd cured my Berlingo's ills and I had for a couple of weeks... now when I start the car, just as the engine bursts into life there is a single knock or thud (possibly from the front right?). If you depress the clutch when you start the car you can feel a vibration from the knock through the pedal (I don't think I'm imagining this!). Always just a single knock, only when you start, always just as the engine starts. Nothing when it's running , sounds great when actually driving.

So... is this the starter motor? Or could it be to do with the new clutch or wheel bearing? It only started last Thursday and the clutch was done a month ago, the wheel bearing about two weeks ago.

Check exhaust mounts and the engine steady at the rear of the engine/gearbox (both from underneath).

It does sound like it could the be the engine giving a shake as it starts. What is the engine steady?

At the back of the engine right near the bottom is a bracket which attaches the engine to the body, one of the engine mounts. Part of this assembly is a bush which wears over time allowing the engine to rock back and forth.

To replace this bush with an OEM one involves removing a driveshaft, or, you can replace with a Polybush. This can be done without removing the driveshaft.

To check for wear, put it on ramps (preferably) or axle stands, get underneath and locate the bracket, then try to rock the engine, youe will plainly see any movement and thus any wear in the bush.

Do you mean the one at the rear of the engine Coco? The bush in this had failed on mine. It was easy enough to remove the mounting with the car on ramps. I pressed out the bush and put a new one in - £16.80 inc vat from the dealer. Stopped the knocking immediately. No need to remove any driveshafts for that one on my 2004 HDi.

We could not move it with the engine off when it was worn. The way I found it was that bush was to stick a prybar in the mount and put pressure on it, then get my missus to start the engine. Without pressure it knocked, with pressure it didn't..

Sorry to resurrect but my car also does this. Had a look and there a large bush attached to the engine and then a smaller bush/bracket that goes from the large bush to the chassis. They all look worn, is this possible?

It's possible, yes. They weren't dear from the dealer. 

It was the smaller bush that was worn out on mine, even though there was no detectable play in it.

did you do one at a time to work that out? I have had the big one done and the garage say the small on is OK, but I have a terrible vibration and I can't think what else it might be....
