Exhaust Clamp

The exhaust bracket/clamp on the rear silencer has rusted through and broke.
Mild steel clamp on stainless box.
The clamp is a separate part to the box and clamps with a bolt around it.
Phone call to 2 local exhaust centres and the clamp on aftermarket box is welded to the box, not available on its own!
"You need to buy a new back box, mate. £75 +vat"
Why would I want to buy a new mild steel box when the stainless one that is on is fine?
So, phone call to Citroen.
Part is not available separate. Nobody makes one.
"You need to buy a new back box, mate"
"How much?"
"You don't want to know...."
"Goodbye."

This must be a common problem, mild steel tends to rust alot quicker than stainless!
Can't believe no one sells this bracket as the original is a part on it's own.
Do I have to bin a perfectly good stainless exhaust and replace with mild steel just because of a broken bracket?

Just searched fleabay and on-line parts sites.
Looks like Citroen are right; no one sells one.

Am sure a friendly person with a welder will be able to fabricate a new band for the back box.....?
Have found these on fleabay.... bought my cat from them,,, excellent!!

Found stainless steel universal band/strap on fleabay.
Not cheap, but will do the job suppose.
Still can't believe they don't make a proper replacement?
How many 1.6 HDi (2.0 HDi and 1.9d are different) are there in the world?
I can't be the only one with a broken strap?illyme:

I'm sure when I went to my local exhast centre (not the Kowboys and fleecers) the back box came with a seperate band???
Might be wrong though as senality is creeping in!:drool:

Hi Rustscrat.
Only rang 2 locals and Citroen stealer, but they and all the ones on fleabay look the same too. There is a metal hanger welded to the box, not a separate strap.

Martin, I was going to suggest the old baler twine again but you would only think I was taking the p*ss (As if:whistle::whistle....

Just had a look on the Screwfix site and that looks just the job, combined with a bit of threaded rod and flat washers through the holes,

let us know how you go on with it, might just buy in some myself on the back of this application as I can think of a few jobs where it may be useful..... Good luck :wave::wave::wave:

Done. Sorted.
Doesn't look pretty; but works.
In the end had to use the top part of the bracket (the bit that hadn't turned into rust flakes!) for support as the "Builders Multi-Purpose Fixing Band" on it's own allowed too much movement from side to side. Used two lengths together (the back box is about 600mm in circumference) for added strength.

And yes, Andy, it looks very useful. Got it from Wickes in the end, and as used less than 1.5m, I have lots left for other 'projects'.:thumbsup:
