2003 2.0 HDI EGR removal
#1
Whilst changing the battery i snapped off one of the vacuum line connections on the solenoid valve that is linked to the EGR.

So i thought rather than buy a new one, why not remove the EGR, just to see if MPG increases any.

After looking at the EGR, it looks as though removing it will mean having to drain the coolant, as there seems to be a coolant hose connected to the EGR pipe work.

Can anyone confirm this or give me some pointers on removing it?

Cheers Guys

if the pipe is not connected surely its not working.is there any need to remove it ?mine is disconnected,i have also disconnected the breather from the valve cover.and blocked the pipe so only air from the filter can get to the engine.alls well so far car runs ok...:p

Is it the same on a 1.6 HDi?
Mine rattles like mad on tick-over.
Garage said to take it off and check inside. If not repairable a new one is £114.
Was going to blank it (a blank is £3.) but will it still rattle? Suppose it shouldn't?
And when it is making a noise, it obviously isn't working properly. Confusedcratch:
Any issues with blanking?

Its stuck open and this has probably caused the solenoid to fail too.

Blanked it this morning with a temp plate and must say it picks up quicker when driving in stop start traffic. Will have to wait and see regards MPG

Its different, how I don't know. I did read somewhere that its not advisable to remove or blank on the 1.6

What problems have you found?

Problem 1, the vacuum pipe which connects to the EGR solenoid is also part of the vacuum side of the servo for the braking system so removal of same pipe may cause the brakes to not operate correctly.

Problem 2, The actual EGR valve is situated at the back of the engine with a bulkhead behind on the 2.0 HDI so not very easy to get at if you have big arms and hands. (On 1.6, turbo and EGR are at front of engine)

800HDI will probably now step in and tell you all the easy way to do it. I have not even attempted it.

I was told that EGR on mine was at the back of the engine behind/under fuel filter.
If it's not, I have something else that is making a noise on tickover not the EGR? Confusedcratch:
Will post a picture.

That's fine until pressure builds up in the crank-case and blows the main crankshaft seals out with consequential loss of oil....

I have the breathers disconnected and running to atmosphere on all my vehicles. Usually I run a piece of garden hose down to the chassis area so that there are no fumes to enter the cab and upset my wife's nostrills . The pipe leading to the airbox then gets plugged, the cleaner the air entering the engine the better the running and the better the emissions come testing time.
