Need a gear box with a longer 5th gear
#1
I have an r-reg 1868cc Diesel Berlingo, it has been converted for wheel chair access but I just use it to transport my motocross bike. It pretty much only does fast A-road and motorway use and is never loaded up.

I find the gear box has very short ratio's and for normal motorway speeds it revving quite high. Does anyone know if there is another gearbox I can fit with longer ratio's more suited for cruising at motorway speeds and if so what make and model does it come from so I get one and fit it

Many thanks Edd

Careful not to go too high -the 1.9 will bog-down quickly, forcing you to drop to fourth a lot more, defeating the point of the excersise

R reg 1868, surely a Berlingo of this age would be an XUD at 1905cc

You could get your box rebuilt with final drive off a 2.2 hdi?

Fitting 15" wheels instead of 14" wheels is probably easier.
The 1.9 n/a is a low powered engine for the vehicle size despite its cubic capacity and the gearing is arranged specifically for a working vehicle and it drives accordingly.Learning to drive leisurely is a part of the solution, sorry.

Thanks for the advice I do appreciate it and I will check the log book for what cc I've got, I only thought it was 1868cc as that's what I was told by Jayar components when I fitted a new power steering pump. I've been used to a 2 litre FWD short wheel base transit, unfortunately a few months ago I was hit from behind and the van has been written off.

I was given the berlingo by my grandad who up graded and I have been really impressed with the little van, I've got about two thousand pounds budget from the insurance pay out, with a majority of my journeys on motorways and fast a-roads which model would you guys recommend?

Sorry to be so naive for the last 10 years I've only had short wheel base LDV Convoys and transits.

Thanks again Edd
