Brakes make whole car judder.

Hi all,

I bought a 52 plate berlingo in January 2011, shortly after purchase i could feel a slight juddering in the break pedal whilst breaking. It continued to get worse so I presumed it was a warped disk. took it to a local garage and asked them to fit new pads and disks.

The garage phoned me and said there was nothing wrong with the pads and disks, but I decided to change them anyway, The symptoms almost completely disappeard apart from still being able to hear a slight squeak on each rotation of the wheel.

The problem seemed to get worse with each drive, but its now pretty much unbearable. it literally shakes your bones upon breaking and the vibration noises are hidious. it literally shakes the spare wheel loose and if I dont lock the boot the vibrations will pop it open.

It has passed an MOT recently so there is nothing unsafe apparently. Its done 65,000 mile, any ideas would be most helpful.

The garge did say that it was very rusty underneath but dont know if that would have a direct affect on breaking.

Hi Dave,
Our '02 1.4 Multispace seems to "eat" discs. I assume your wheel bearings are ok as it's just passed the MOT.
Make sure the mating surface between the hub & disc is clear of rust etc and the calipers are free.
What you are getting is disc runout. If you do a search on the internet you'll come across loads of info, including a demo of the discs being machined on the car to ensure they're running true.
You can try moving the discs through 180 degrees to see if that helps.
Also check the rest of the front suspension/steering components for any signs of wear, although the garage should have done this as a matter of course.
Some cheap (Green) discs can also cause a re-occurance early on

Ive ordered myself a dial indicator so I'll be able to see just how far out the are. I'll update my findings when it arrives.

As Landmark says, the surface between the disk and hub has to be smooth and clean.

I wire wooled mine so the surface was like glass before fitting new disks. Alot of garages won't bother spending that extra 20 minutes and will just bang the new disks onto a rusty surface.

I agree with that,plus coating hub/disc faces with copaslip.
