faulty horn
#31
Hi all!
Thanks for all the info. I've the exact same problem. Horn only working with the key out of the ignition etc.
I'm a bit confused by all the info on here.
Rustycrats has put up some very useful drawings here and as always is a mind of information. I'm just wondering though what my course of action should be.
Do I as suggested earlier put a wire from the steering column to the body to create a new earth or go and chase the bad earth?
From my understanding the bad earth for the horn is in the wing?
Is that even accessible? Or have I picked up that drawing wrong?
Any further information would be gratefully received and I promise to put up pictures of any fix I do sort out.
Cheers.

I had the the very same problem as you describe, I found that you need to remove the airbag and underneath you will see a wire that is connected to the steering wheel by a metal clip. I removed the clip and replaced it with a ring connector and drill a self tapping screw into the metal center. I did this and it sorted the problem. This is a common fault with the horn and many people have had to do the same.
Hope this helps

Rabbit73 gave a good solution. Wiring the steering column to the body is a poor solution that may create other problems. For me a good solution was a bit of copper jammed into the gap in the joint of the steering column inside the engine compartment.

Took my Berlingo in for a fuel filter change and, as I have the problem with my horn, spoke to the mechanic. He told me that he has so far had 100% success by removing the earth lead from the back of the horn and replacing it with another one that goes directly to earth (rather than via a return loop back up through the stearing wheel).

This does require removing the front bumper, but will solve the issue permanently.

Incidentaly, he had done one just a month back, so was quite familiar with the issue.

He told me that the reason that the horn works with the key out is that the current uses another part of the ignition as a ground rather than grounding via the long loop back to the inner wing ground point. Once the key is in, the wire taking the ground becomes live and therefore the path to ground is broken.

The workshop I used was the Essex Fire service Workshop, so they are extremely knowledgable about vehicles and common faults.

Both methods work, but in different ways.

The bumper-off job allows you to bypass around 3 metres of the earth loop by simply taking the earth straight to the chassis.
Less likely to fail again in the future as well.

What is the bumper off method?
Do you have to run a new wire from the wheel down to a new earth?
Cheers for your help.

I too have this VERY problem, except the horn works when key is in the slot, but when turned to lights, or ignition the horn doesn't work.

Did the solution finally present itself?

Hi All, I too had this exact problem. However there are other threads on the web that suggest this is down to a poor earth connection between the steering column and chassis earth. After much fiddling and swearing I fixed this by wrapping some sheathed earth cable stripped back about 3 inches around the base of the steering shaft, just next to the clutch pedle. I wrapped it around the 1 inch shaft near the spline that is visible there and held it in place with a wide tie wrap - a metal cooloing hose clamp would be better but I didn't have any to hand. I then earthed this cable to the bolt holding the throttle/accelorator assembly in place in the footwell. To allow the stearing shaft to turn and steer your Berlingo, you need a bit of slack in the cable run. I added a label to this cable saying 'horn earth' just in case someone later wonders what on earth (pune!) it is there for. It did fix mine, and the horn seems louder too.
