1.6 HDi 75 Van - Rough / poor MPG?
#1
Hi all, I am after some advice.

Having just got a 62 Plate Berlingo van to replace the Pug Partner 1.9D we had for 10 years (from new!), I am wondering if there is a fault developing with her?

Our first run was for a job down below London, a nice 500 mile round trip. Fully loaded, she cruised her way there and back at 48mpg.

Since that trip, I am convinced it has started to sound a little rough / rattly. Is this usual after some running-in miles? I recently went to Scotland, with no load in the back (and a steady cruise up the M6) and it did 38 MPG???

I am now plodding around on jobs and getting around 37MPG, with it still sounding - to my ears - slightly GRUFF when you accelerate etc. I don't feel it is pulling as well as it should either.

Are there any known issues with air leaks or pipes prone to issues etc? It has only dont 4000 miles but I think a visit to Citroen may be on the cards.

Thanks all,

Rob.

Should be getting more than 48 on a run.
And 37 doesn't sound good around town, either.
Then again, after such a low mileage, it's hardly run in.
As for the noise, I would definately be taking it back to Citroen!

Definately- unless your thrashing it you should not expect less than 55.
Mines a '12 plate 4000 miles up with roof bars on and I can easily beat that

It needs to go back
It is on my to do list.
But not right at the top

Bugger - so its not just me then? Is yours a 75 BHP model too? I don't even have roof bars on mine!

I have left 'Computer 1' without reset for the last 3800 miles and its average is 43mpg over that time - and this is dropping too.

HDI engines don't do well on mpg in cold weather. Neither do most diesel engines. Our BMW 120d used to average 50 most of the year, but get to around 0oC and it dropped to 38. My 406 HDI coupe is the same, constantly averages 48mpg all year round until winter hits, then it's down to low 40s, same with the Berlingo, picked her up from Wales 2 weeks ago and averaged 48 mpg on the way home, now after 2 weeks of use in the sub zero temperatures its down to 38 mpg!

Just my 7 years experience with HDI engines. HTH.

Yes its a 75hp
This last week with the minus six its doing 57.
One point though-the hdi is a very different beast from the 1.9 - I took a while to get used to it. Im currently on my third one and have found they've all behaved the same.

Change up at no more than 2000rpm and try to let the motor build up its own revs with the turbo, not your boot.
Once you're in the new gear the revs will have dropped to 1500 -right in the torque peak -perfect.
It is on my to do list.
But not right at the top

Could be an injector leaking compression, this is quite common on the 1.6 engine

Hi,
My 1.6HDi van does 45mpg overall. Never varies by more than 2mpg even if the aircon is on. That's driving around with all my tools/ladders/cables in the back. I do 650 miles per month, 400 miles of motorway and the rest is heavy traffic city driving.

The van has now covered 3500 miles from new.

If your mpg is actually declining, then you're right to be concerned as it does sound like something's wrong.

Good luck getting it sorted & let us know how you get on.

If its the same engine as my 1,6hdi 407 and has an electric EGR , i would unplug this while vehicle is turned off , this will keep EGR closed , the light will come on MIL but it`ll find out if EGR is at fault , if no difference then plug EGR back in and light will go out .
