I used to be under the impression that putting petrol into a diesel was less of a calamity than diesel into a petrol -a colleague filled up his ex post office Escort with unleaded.
It just ran really sluggish but was ok afterwards.

I once put a couple of quids worth into my C15 (my first ever diesel )
Luckily I had 3/4 of a tanks space to top up with derv.
The 1.9 didnt seem to mind at all but Im not sure the current HDi's would be quite so forgiving with all the dpf bsi epg gfy etc.

When I went into the kiosk to pay ,the cashier smiled and said " Trying the pick and mix were we love?"
She turned to her mate and added " Its always the blokes who do it too"
Bitch

Landcrab-youre in good company at least.
It is on my to do list.
But not right at the top

I seem to recall that the filler neck on a petrol car is too small to fit a diesel nozzle which is why it is always diesel cars that get misfuelled. The original reason for the smaller neck was to prevent leaded petrol being put into cars requiring unleaded only when both fuels were still available. The diesel pump nozzle is the larger size of the old unleaded nozzle.

Preventing misfuelling needs concentration, just think 'diesel' as you drive onto forecourt, this works for me. I also check price on pump before pulling trigger to ensure it is the diesel price, your last line of defence. Big Grin

Putting diesel in an old style diesel is far less crucial, however a common rail diesel will not fair well if petrol is used through its system.

Just for the sake of statistics: We've done it twice. Once diesel in a Citroen 2CV, and once petrol in a 1.9d ZX.
And C's daughter borrowed the Berlingo (petrol) the other day, and (thank goodness) phoned to check what to put in it - she already had the diesel nozzle in the car's filler when she thought of calling!
