Mine are coloured blue with a lot of scratches but I don't mind. I don't spend a lot of time looking at them. I think later on I might get some fine emery and rub the rest of the paint off.
So where does this bit go then ?

There isn't much more detail to go into. I found it easiest to start at the top of the insert & pop it out working down the door handle. It feels like it may break, but they don't.
As far as using emery on the painted inserts goes, I wouldn't advise it. I did it on mine & the plastic ended up milky looking & scruffy. The price of the inserts ranges from £6 each up to £20 each depending on the colour of them. I opted to buy the basic grey plastic inserts as used on the vans. May not look as pretty as the painted inserts, but the old inserts showed me that the painted ones don't stand up to much & can soon look scruffy whereas the dull grey plastic ones will still look the same.

I've found that rather than spend dosh on new ones....which will very quickly in time scratch again... it's pretty easy to scrape of the old coating completely with some very fine wet and dry. A quick prime with some acrylic primer and spray the top coat in the colour of your choice, normally aluminium or silver. You can even laquer over the top if you want. Just as durable as new and when they do eventually scratch again you can keep repainting them with the same colour. I've done this on my own cars and also on every Multispace and Xsara Picasso I've prepped for sale.
