just had temp gauge rise to red and stop light come on.lifted bonnet and it was bubbling away.What do i look for ?

No the fans will only cut in when the temp gets to about 95.
if the fans were on and it still overheated like you described with the header tank bubbling it could be a sticking thermostat, head gasket or blocked radiator.
how far can you drive before it starts to overheat?

i had done about 6or7 miles before i noticed the temp gage had shot right up

i would say change the thermostat first - quite cheap and easy to get, right hand side of head looking from front of vehicle.
