Stiff Steering

Hi, I have a 2005 1.9D van with 90k on it. The steering is ok while I am driving with the revs over 1800rpm, when I slow down or stop(under 1800rpm) the steering becomes very stiff. I assume this is something to do with the pump. The belt is in good condition and the correct tightness and the reservoir has the correct amount of fluid in it. The fluid looks good with no "froth". I have come to a conclusion that the return valve might be stuck slightly open, so at low revs there isn't enough pressure to compensate for it. Am I near the mark or way off (wouldn't be the first time!)?

Before you do anything else check the UJs on the steering column.
They are known to seize and a goodly amount of WD40-like spray followed closely
by a good dollop ( sorry... technical term! ) of medium grease might just cure this.

I agree with O'J but I use m/cycle spray chain lube,it has more "body" than WD40 which is not so good for load bearing items.
Use WD40 first to give the chain lube a path & initial freeing off.
Then apply c/lube sparingly a few times over a month
I treat my uj annually,& the c/lube is also good for door hinges etc.

Just sorted mine out tonight (for the time being) - I suspected the strut top mount, but after removing the strut from the hub it was obvious it wasn't.

It was the Universal joint. Soaked it in WD40, worked it back and forward from lock to lock, repeated several times, then plastered it in grease.

It will need replaced, but it's cured the stickiness and failure to self-centre for now.
