Correct Tyres?
#1
I will be buying a Berlingo van for work shortly - quick question regards tyres: Do I NEED to fit the commercial tyres © or can I legally use normal car type tyres?
Car tyres are obviously cheaper and easier to obtain but in the event of an insurance claim would I get in trouble for not using commercial rated tyres on the van?

Its ultimately up to your insurance company -some will not know or care some will insist ,some will bump up the premium.
Give them a ring and get a the answer in an email to keep.
The tyres on my new van arent specifically "commercial" grade-Ive seen them fitted to cars.
Its the load rating that an assesor would be looking for if he had nothing better to do so Id be looking at that rather than anything else.

I would tend to agree with evdama , make sure your load rating is over cautious and for that matter the speed rating also , if your tyre is designed for the maximum top speed and maximum weight of your vehicle then you are suitably equiped , officer ! my two penneth fwiw

Indeed, commercial rated tyres of matching specs are likely to have a higher treadwear rating - not so much fun in the wet.

well I have got my 'new' van today - a 2003 Berlingo 800 Hdi & true to form, the tyres are knackered ! At the moment it is sat on 175/65 R14 with a load and speed rating of 82T. Before I go down to ATS for a set of like for like replacements are these the correct tyres for the van? Sorry for what might be an obvious question but all the tyre websites come up with 15 inch wheel size and I don't have a handbook to refer to, I just don't want to spend £150 on a set of tyres to find that they are the wrong load and speed rating ....

Thats the tyres my van came with but its a 600 lx and the load rating is ok for it I think. An 800 would need to be higher? I think :S

The correct load rating is 88/90 as stated on the sticker between drivers door hinges.
But....
Mine had one previous owner (a leasing company) and came to me with 82 rated tyres all round. The fronts needed replacing and my local tyre company put Toyo Proxes CF1s on with an 82 rating.
I now (37,000miles later) have Bridgestone Ecopia B250s on the rear and Uniroyal RainExperts on the front, both 82 rated.
Strictly speaking this is wrong and (I suppose) an offence, especially in the event of a serious accident. But, as the most my van ever carries is a bit of camping gear, some food and a crate of beer (95% of the time it is absolutely empty) it weighs less than a Multispace.
(Van weighs 1130kg and Multispace 1244kg.)

I will wait for the comments saying I should be locked up and the key thrown away!

I wouldn't worry as long as the speed rating is alright for your vehicle. Tyres should be round and black and have lots of lines on. Big Grin
So where does this bit go then ?

Thats what I kinda expected - I've seen loads of part worn tyres on Berlingo ebay and they are all 82T, my guessing is that 82T's are fitted most of the time for price savings. Looks like I am going to have to raid the piggy bank for the correct tyres !

I had same thing with web sites saying they should be 15" but are 14" in fact, was told by tyre centre that insurance would play up if correct loading for van was not used. Got Avon Avanza AV10 think they are 90 loading.
They look much better when carrying plenty of weight, stronger in the sidewalls.
