Turbo gone at 40,000 miles!

Hi all

I have a 2008 Citroen Berlingo M-SP VTR HDI 90 with the 1560cc (Diesel) Engine just hit 40,000 miles and the wife noticed a rattling noise and upon a drive myself I noticed there was no turbo kicking in.

Long story short is it looks like the turbo is gone as there is massive play on the bearings :brickwall:

Phoned Citreon and as the last major service was done at Kwik Fit and not them (the other ones were) and I am the second owner there is no goodwill and they want £1100 or more to sort it :censored:

What is really annoying is the "full service" by the local Kwik fit was only done 6000 miles ago (~8 months) so after reading around here I am suspecting they have put the wrong oil in to cause the premature failure - is that plausible and could I get them to foot all / some of the repair costs?

There are 2 options from what I can tell:

  1. Pay Citroen the full whack they want for fixing this
  2. Go down the aftermarket route via someone like http://turbocharger-solutions.co.uk/ and get a trusted mechanic I know to do the work hopefully for an all in price of £700

Any thoughts / advice most welcome!

Personally, I would go for option 2. If ypu know and trust your mechanic, then there should be no problem with any potential warranty problem with the work he carries out.

For you to have any form of redress against Kwik Fit, you will need confirmation of the work that they did, what parts were used, including the brand and specification of the oil that they used.

Drain the oil and have some of it analysed.

Also you could nip to Kwik-Fit and say something like....you are thinking
of doing your own oil change and what would they recommend.
Does the Kwik-Fit invoice state which oil was used?

Personally I wouldn't let Kwik-Fit empty the ash-trays.

Thanks for the quick replies guys.

I wouldn't normally use Kwik Fit either but the main dealer was fully booked and as it was only a full service which I didn't think it could cause any issues!

Kwik Fit have said they will take a look at it and give me price etc tomorrow (one of their mobile super technicians apparently!) which I will compare to options 1 and 2 above and see what to do from there.

Oh and all I have on the receipt oil wise is "FULL SERVICE SYNT S" so no idea what they used :-(

I am with Ol'Jeffers, get the oil checked and if the wrong type has been used then get yourself a brief and take it up with Kwik Flip...

I wouldn't even let them touch it now, let alone quote you for a repair.. They are simply the worst high street fast fit chain ever!

I have left it with them to give them and their senior guy (who covers 10 different garages) a chance to look at it and give me some options before I consider my position.

Also got the guy to check on the system to see what oil was used for the service and he said fully synthetic 5 40 which depending on who you listen to on here is probably ok but maybe not ideal although probably not technically wrong to give me a chance getting them for is it?

Would using non specific oil for 6k miles really destroy the turbo?

It certainly wouldnt help-in fact there are even variations specifically for citroen hdi motors.
Also there is no knowledge of how the previous tenent treated the car.
