TU3JP Tappet Wear ( 1.4 8V petrol)
#1
Has anyone else experienced this? 240K miles on an untouched motor, head gasket finally let go around the oil passage. Rest of valvetrain looks respectable and bores are pretty decent.

On the wearing faces of its tappets, one of the followers has suffered the hardening fail completely, another couple look "almost there". Valve tips appear fine.

I've ordered another set of tappet screws from my supplier, to be sure.

New adjusters fitted as part of head overhaul. Supplier of choice was Accessoires Citroën Lorient - posted cost came out barely more than theoretical local price (considering none were in stock anyhow).

Close examination of old adjuster screws showed that much of the damage was caused by allowing the lash to grow excessively large. Basically, they snotted themselves on the valve tips. Quite a few had - upon inspection - stepped wear patterns or early stage failure of the surface hardening. I love how old school this motor is!
