So I went to change the glow plugs. Took of the air ducting over the engine etc. Fitted new plugs and reassembled. Engine starts refuses to rev and belches out loads of smoke. Hmm..... disassemble, refit old plugs and try again, seems better. Took it for a run, got about 400 yards and loads of smoke out of exhaust. Bugger. Give up and talk to garage as I've got MOT on Monday. Garage sensibly say, you must have fitted something wrong if it's suddenly got worse.

Start to disassemble then look at choke type thingy in intake duct (what does it do?) I find this is closing after the engine starts. If I hold it open the car runs ok. So then I find that there are two thin pipes coming from somewhere to the bottom of this choke thingy. Reverse the two pipes and all is well.

Hangs head in shame and shuffles away quietly :brickwall::brickwall:

Probably a device to divert warm air into the intake, your technical description is probably good enough though. Wink
So where does this bit go then ?

Two pipes from the egr solenoid... divert exhaust fumes into the intake until engine warm, PITA to be honest... blanked mine off at the exhaust outlet and the intake is as clean as a whistle now... do it Smile

If at first you don't succeed, destroy all evidence that you tried.

I did wonder about that. There is a big metal pipe comes in from the exhaust at that point. Under the flap valve thingy there is an electrical connection and two air pipes about 3mm internal diameter. It can't be a hot air divert because that bit is in the air intake pipe leading to the choke flap valve thingy.

The air intake ducts do look a bit oily and carbony so maybe I will blank it off.
