Coil pack question
#1
Hi Folks,
I know electrical stuff can just give up but what is the average life expectency of a coil pack (2002 1.4 multispace )
We have an occasional missfire and have the fault code P0300 for "Random/multiple cylinder missfire detected" recorded twice, associated with the rough running.
It had new plugs and crank sensor 2 yrs (14,000 miles) ago & a new coil pack 3yrs (24,000 miles) ago. The connection to the pack has been cleaned & appears ok.
Thanks,
Griff Smile

You can detect coil pack failure by comparing the dwell time of each coil in the pair. An appreciable difference indicates there is a coil failing.

Is your rocker cover weeping oil?

Hi Addo,
I do have a dwell meter I used to use on my old Triumph car with a traditional coil and easy to access terminals to connect the meter to. How do I connect it to the Berlingo's coil pack?
The cars not here at the moment to be able to check the rocker cover for oil leaks. What is your train of thought on this? Oil causing a short on the plugs?
Regards,
Griff

The coil behaviour is unfortunately not checkable with a dwell meter, it's measured with a diagnostic kit like Lexia, Diagbox or one of the smarter handheld scanning tools as offered by Launch or Snap-On. It shows in decimals of a second, how long the oscillating negative signal has to be applied to each coil before sufficient voltage is achieved to jump the plug gap. Is anyone located near you in the list here of Lexia users, or the "Lexia Map" on French Car Forum?

I'm more wondering if carbon-rich dust is being bonded by an oil weep, and slowly tracking up the rubber insulators. The only other related comment I can offer is that on my own 1.4 petrol, the (factory fitted) injector base seals were kind of puny and may have leaked air, causing a lean miss at times.

I had similar misfire on a Clio.
That was the coil pack. Bought one new off Ebay from a 'specialist'; was under £50. Fitted it myself in 20 mins, and ran like a dream afterwards.
Original one lasted 50,000 miles and 6 years.
As with most things these days, it's disposable; not repairable. Confusedillyme:
No experience of Citroen one, but hope this helps?
