I put my Bingo (Mk2 1.9DW) in for a cam belt change yesterday and said I wanted the valve clearances checked too. The car has been reluctant to start when cold and I'm fairly sure it's not the glowplugs. When I booked it in the bloke said that in his experience it is very rare to see one of these with tight valves. But because of the advice here I insisted the valves were checked. The car's only done 135k miles.

Got a call this morning. Inlet valve clearances so tight that you couldn't get the thinnest feeler gauge in and if you turned the engine over it would draw the gauge in and you couldn't pull it out. Just hope it hasn't burnt the valves or anything.

It just shows that forums really do provide a great service and a wealth of information.

It will also be interesting to see how the general running and the fuel economy goes after the works.

Well done that man whoever he was for suggesting the valve clearance checks.

It seems a bit more spritely (if such a term can be used for the 1.9). THere does seem to be a new whine coming from somewhere in the engine which definitely wasn't there before. THey have changed the cam belt and tensioners and the water pump and aux drive belt so I'm hoping it's something bedding in.

Spritely is a bit OTT.Less asthmatic springs to mind.
The whine can be caused by an overtightened belt.Hope not.

My wife took it in yesterday armed with my written description of the noise. They had a listen and said it looks like the cam belt is slightly over tight. So it's going to be adjusted early next week. At no cost to me of course. At least they seem to be prepared to rectify their mistakes without arguing which is more than you can say for some places.

If overtightened severely,it could break the belt.If ever I had a problem I always erred on the safe side & left a bit of slack.Meaning a slight amount, not flapping about.

If it is the later engine with the " floating " crank pulley then incorrect tension means the locking pins don't align so assuming the pins align then it is likely to be auxiliary belt tension over done.
