Heating/Cooling problem Berlingo 1.6HDI 2008

Hi since I bought my Berlingo I have the same problem. It takes at least 5-6 miles for the temperature to start rising. It never reaches 90 degrees. Its usually between 70-85. Eventually you can feel that the heating is working but not for long. After a while it's starting to blow with cold air and the temperature is rising to 85. Then suddenly it starts blowing with warm air again and the temperature drops to 75. So lets say 5 minutes of warm air then 2 minutes and again 5 mins warm , 2 mins cold .....and so on. After 200-300 miles coolant level drops and its the engine starts to slightly overheat. When its blowing with cold air temperature rises up to 100. So my car mechanic replaced the water pump and the thermostat and it didn't help. I'm going to flush the system with some cleaning liquid today and I'll check if that would make any difference. Can anyone help me with that problem? The van only has 40000 miles on the clock. Its very weird that the coolant level drops tho.

Ideally you need to get it pressure tested because you are losing water some place.

When I first started reading your post I thought air lock but as the post went on im starting to think head gasket but at 40k that's very odd unless its been very hot at some time? If its been very hot it could be the gasket but also a crack in the head, block would produce the same fault.

I suspect its a leak in the cooling system some place but you may also have an air lock - like I say you need it pressure testing by someone who knows what they are doing.

thanks I was thinking about a leak somewhere.The head seems ok cause there's no sign of the water(bubbles) in the oil

As my van broke down today, I found out by a very good AA man that because you don't have water in the oil ,does not mean your head is ok. CO2 can leak into the water reservoir !! This can be tested by using a bit of kit that has liquid in that sits in place of where the filler cap goes . The liquid is blue in colour and changes when co2 is present to a green/yellow colour .If you don't have said kit you can test by sniffing reservoir with the filler cap off ..if it has a strange smell you are getting a co2 leak from the head into your water .Another indication is a white foam like bubble bath(not like mayo) in the filler reservoir. Try and get all the air out and bleed the system using the bleed screws and squeeze the pipes. A pressure test on the heating system will tell if your water pump is working and when you rev the engine it should drop in pressure a tad which is the water pump, pumping around. I hope this helps

I wonder at the value of the kit that detects CO2 in the water ? Water will naturally have CO2 in it anyway, maybe he meant carbon monoxide CO. Did he sell you one?.
My antifreeze has a funny smell when I sniff it. I don't do it often though.

I have had,& used one of these "block Testers" for more years than I care to remember.It's a brilliant bit of kit if used properly.Confusedalut: Ps It is CO.
