EGR Valve Fault
I have a engine management light showing on my Berlingo 16 HDI. A garage cleared the fault which was showing a EGR fault. When I removed the EGR it did not seem that bad to me but a gave it a good clean anyway by spraying EGR cleaner into it. Problem is the light has come back on and still showing the same fault. Should I strip the valve and try clean it again or is this a waist of time and rather replace it. They seem a bit pricey and was hoping a good clean might sort it out. Also do you think the cooler might have something to do with it?
Cheers for any advice.
Give it another clean and stick one of these on....

Heh, what a price. It's probably great for those who don't have the time to make their own plate. I too would block it!
That seems very good idea and a much cheaper option. Does that have any effect on the vehicle at all. What about when it has the MOT will that make any difference.
I bought the exact same plate last week and fitted it myself so easy 20 min job.
Since then my engine light goes out when the car starts and the car is running brilliant.
All it does is stops some exhaust gases from being recycled back into the engine (which i think is a good thing as your engine will be kept cleaner and your engine oil will keep cleaner longer)
As for the MOT i believe it wont make a difference as mine just passed the emissions test without problem and my EGR wasn't working.
i think it just adds more % to the emissions but its still under the amount needed to pass.

I fitted one last October just after the MOT (coincidence; not the reason) and has run 100% better since.
Will have to wait till this October for emmission results, which were rubbish anyway! Confusedillyme:

I could be wrong but I was under the impression emissions are actually cleaner with out the EGR, there's less smoke because the engine isn't having to recycle old dirty air.
It could fail if you have a warning light on the dash once its fitted though but as gamebuster said it goes off once the car is started so you would probably get away with it..
Recently had same problem only I made costly mistake by diagnosing it as the egr valve and cleaning it didn't work as it wasn't that bad anyway so fitted new pierburg egr valve as reset error code but kept coming back. I was puzzled so popped bonnet checked valve over and followed the hose all the way ad eventually traced it right back to where it joined engine as the hose had been rubbing again te engine cover causing a hole so wasn't vacuum tight so that's maybe worth a look see my previous thread and it has a pic on. Good luck
Thanks for the comments. I was talking to someone else today who said he had the same problem but could not get it sorted until he had it diagnosed, which said the fault was with the Airflow meter. Apparently came up as egr fault. Once he changed the Airflow meter it sorted the problem. MY engine is sounding a bit rattly which he says sounds the same as the problem he was having. Does anyone think that it could have something to do with the airflow meter.
