Jerky Steering
#11
Hi
Just thought i'd mention, had jerky steering myself always worst 1st thing in morning, spent hours finding cheap steering pump, and it turned out to be the drive belt slipping, it was well worn!
Tip: make sure at least TWICE you know the correct route for belt as once its off it all looks so different. could not not find pic anywhere online. trial and error wins again!

My 04 Forte's Steering "kick's back" the steering wheel at the end of a turn every time. Could this be a Fluid problem? I have damp mats on the drivers side foot well, and can't find out why, but could someone tell me how this would affect steering as I don't understand this. Help!

Changing the oil on mine made a big difference, a second change and its almost perfect ( 2005 1.9d ).

Sorry but I'm no good at floor mats.

If it's slack,it's potentially dangerous. My advice is to change both sides. That way you only have to re-track once.

Thanks Terry d

Not so long back some fluid was spilled on the drive belt due to a leaking part. Ever since, the drive belt squeal's from time to time, so I believe it is the drive belt slipping just like you say.

I have been more concerned this week by another problem. The front drivers foot-well gets flooded during heavy rain, this has been bugging me for some time. The windscreen drains have all been cleared and is draining into the wheel arch like it should be. But I have now cut the carpet out in frustration , and found that water is entering though the welded wheel arch strengthener behind the accelerator pedal. But I just don't know why, damn it!
Cheers
Grum

Many thanks

If you know where the leak is,use Drip Check or similar sealer.
If you don't know the source, sprinkle the area with talc(non scented or you will get strange look from passengers). The leak will leave a trail in the talc.
Ps,the damp can cause the steering column UJ to rust & sieze.
Spray the joint with WD40,don't drown it,a few times. Then use a good quality oil to lubricate it.I do mine once a year.Confusedalut:
