Dw8 to xu9dt engine conversion help
Hi, as above I am wanting to do an engine conversion to the old 306td engine. I am a qualified mechanic but just wanting someone to guide me in the right direction with a few things to make life easy. Do I use the original loom/ecu or do I use the loom from the 306? What other wiring changes will I need to make? I've read to keep the speedo working I need to use the flywheel from the dw8 lump? Which gearbox would people advise to use? I can't really afford to have the van off the road too long so a speedy engine change is needed so any help is massively appreciated

Have a read of this thread it may be of use to you especially the addos entries.
Are we there yet????? No we fecking ain`t  gggggrrrrrrr
Ex 1.6hdi van now 3 seater 1.4 multispace
Mine was petrol to petrol, though. You'd need to look at the chassis looms to see what wires are there - I found it was 85% as per the diagrams but the rest required fossicking about.
Ok cheers for the fast replies, think I might to have to get stuck in and figure it out for myself
There's no worries about physical fit; it will go in fine. I suggest you'll want a 306 or Xsara XU series subframe though, if the gearbox is being changed as well (I presume it is).

Also leave out the radiator until it starts/runs as you'll have SFA access to the motor front otherwise.
Thanks, I've been given a written off 306 from a family member which he has owned since new and has been serviced every 6 months, it has a fresh clutch, timing belt, alternator and other bits, seems silly not to try and replace the old tired engine on the berlingo really
You'll notice the extra poke, too. The change of subframe is not necessary if you are handy with an oxy torch - need to move the gearshift pedestal slightly, also the lateral restraining mount will need new holes drilling slightly to the offside of where it probably is now. (Although if the 306 subframe is undamaged, just leave the rack hanging while you swap, put your Berlingo wishbones on it and be done.)
Thanks for the advice, the only damage that may cause problem is a broken drive shaft so may need to source one or use the original box if they arent the same?
