Diesel mpg question
#1
Hi all,

thinking of getting a second-hand Berlingo, and wondering which is the most economical model to run as I'll be doing a lot of miles in it. The "official" fuel economy figures make the 1.6HDi look much better than the 2.0HDi and 1.9D. Is there really that much difference?

My previous 1.9D Berlingo did about 42mpg on a 70mph motoway trip although it did struggle to cruise at 70, a bit of a hill & it slowed down. My 1.6hdi current model Berl does about 48mpg on a 70mph trip albeit on fairly flat roads but does maintain speed uphill. The 1.6 is a more modern & economical engine but if you do go for one ensure you have a main dealer service history as oil change interval with correct grade oil used is critical on these engines.

Mine is only doing 44-45 mpg and I drive it like miss daisy. Its a shame really as i was expecting more than what I get. 1.6Hdi too. Been very reliable though.

I've had my 1.6 HDi for 6 years & 36000m.At a steady 60 mph on m/ways I get 55mpg.On A roads,sticking to speed limits,60mpg is easy.70+ on m/ways45-50mpg.Hope this helps.Confusedalut:

Sounds good to me! Will mostly be driving on A roads, and sticking to speed limits of course!

My 2005 2.0 HDi (DW10 engine) gives just short of 50 mpg at 60mph but drops quite quickly when faster. At 70mph it returns about 44 mpg. No doubt a factor is its decidedly unaerodynamic shape.

It badly needs an Italian tune up.

The 1.6 TDi Mk.3, logically, is not going to give quite the same economy as the earlier and smaller Mk.2
with the same engine.
On a long run, and I've now done several over 300 miles, I usually get around 58-64 mpg The ECU has been re-
programmed for more torque and I can drive at 30mph in 5th. Also I always use Millers Diesel Additive
on every fuel stop. I do wish, however that the newer dual-scroll turbo-charger on the 115bhp
Mk.3 would fit on the older Mk.2....

Speed is everything in the 1.9D.

I got more MPG while towing a 220KG motorbike and bike trailer (let's say 100KG) and loaded with tools/clothes for a weekend rallying.

Stayed at 55 - 65, behind lorries and made it to Northumberland (420 miles) with diesel left over.

70+ mph with just the van and normal work tools and materials (Around 150kg) will see a tank last 390 - 400 miles.

It also has a roof rack but no roof box.

As you can see from my "fuelly" (see sig line) I'm achieving a long term average of 56.8. this is a 1.6hdi without dpf, carries very little weight and driven with economy in mind.

My last one was a 1.9D driven in the same style for economy I could just break the 50mpg in the summer. However most of its life it was driven in a typical 'white van man' style and was usually high 30's

Seems very low if you are driving slowly, what weight are you carrying ? and tyre pressures and Have you calibrated your mileometer ? do a comparison with a journey against the same route on this site link and see how it compares.
