Modutop Paint
#1
Hi all.

Can anyone advise on the paint colour for the Modutop roof? It seems to be a charcoal colour with metal flake...

Various areas on mine have worn, and in some places it has peeled a little from the GRP, so I want to either touch-in problem areas, or mask around the seals and sand & repaint the whole thing.

Any recommendations...?

Thanks!

Ah! A perrenial question to which as yet no-one seems to have an answer!
I would say that you need to approach a friendly body-shop (or automotive paint supplier)
and see if they can give you a clue.
What I would recommended is that you never take your Modutop through an auto car wash
neither subject the pretty roof bars to any weight as it's possible to break the adhesive seal
(the top is just stuck in with sealant) and you'll then have a very, very expensive leak!
In fct if you want to use the roof to carry anything, get some roof bars and use the alternative
bar mounts .

Auto Carwash???!!!! You are clearly unaware of what I do for a living !!! Wink

shan't be putting any weight on the bars - fear not.

OK - I'm thinking remove loose or delaminated paint, rub-down to key the surface and then repaint with a few coats of a plasticised black or v. Dark grey paint. Sound good?

A bit of a loaded question, that!! You're a car detailer and you clearly have extremely high standards of finish for your own car!
Irrespective of the fact that most of this re-touching would be invisible to anyone other than extremely tall people!
I'd use anything that didn't look really obvious so an anthracite coloured paint would be my choice as I think it could be blended in.

OJ - does that caution extend to the Mk3 Modutop? What are the alternative roof mounts?

If I was repainting it all I'd have it body colour.

TBH I know less than nothing about Mk.3s. Hopefully the problem has been addressed, and like most horrible problems it only seems to have affected a couple of people.
If the roof panel is still being held in by only what amounts to a rubber windscreen seal I would hesitate to load it up
though.....On the Mk.2 you can fit van style roofbars as there are the mountings there for them and they don't load the roof.
Anyway who needs to use auto carwashes now? Surely you must have a local team of nice Eastern Europeans that will give you very good results for a fiver?
That's who I use and I even looked after them at Christmas! They do a cracking job and even dress my tyres! Tip: Don't use the teams in supermarket car parks
as they don't always use clean water and mitts and can scratch your paint!!

Not sure what the etiquette on old threads is, but I have the exact same problem. The paint is flaking away on the modutop, particularly around the roof rails.

Did anyone ever find out what colour it is? For an M59

I don't have room to do any major work on it, so I might have to take it in somewhere, but I might be able to sort it with a rattle can and some sandpaper.
