Hi, my 1.4 2000 multispace seems to be only firing on 2 cylinders. I'm assuming its an ignition coil fault. Can you test these? Its the type that sits on the plugs. Any other suggestions on potential cause. It happened suddenly ,loss of power acompanied by a burning smell for a while. I started it a few times them pulled the plugs, 2 wet 2 dry.

I would certainly get the coils checked.Which 2 cyls are dry? If 2 & 3 it may be a blown head gasket.Check compressions warm, wet & dry.Good luck. As an afterthought,if you need coils,GSF do good oe cheaper than dealer prices.

The coil packs on the 1.4 are known to be less than wonderful....that's where I'd start.

Thanks both, plugs 2 and 4 are the dry ones. My other thought was could it be an air leak.

That's not good - it suggests the coil pack is quite poorly or your crank angle sensor is not well.

Do you have an 'engine fault' light?
The 1.4 engine uses a 'wasted spark' firing sequence, where it fires two spark plugs at the same time. One for the Compression stroke, as normal, and one during the exhaust stroke. This cuts down the number of coils and cabling as you only need 2 coils in the coilpack, but tends to knock out two cylinders at the same time when the coilpack dies.

According to Haynes it fires 1&4 - 2&3 cylinders together.

Which injectors are fired together?
(They're also fired in pairs.)
I have it written down somewhere, but not where I can get to it just now.
